Excelsior Hotel Ernst
Trankgasse 1-5/Domplatz
Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Lively
152 Rooms
Long Cologne’s number one grand hotel, the landmark Excelsior Hotel Ernst has stood on this spot since 1863, in a commanding position on the cathedral square, in the heart of the city center. This stately old palace has played host to emperors, statesmen and all manner of VIPs, and today finds it in fighting form, its traditional interiors and antique furnishings in tip-top shape.
The lobby is hung with priceless artworks, and the winter garden, an indoor lounge, sits beneath an ornate stained-glass roof. Upstairs the rooms and suites are outfitted with crisp reproduction furnishings, rich fabrics and modern amenities like satellite television, sound-proof windows and wireless internet access. French doors open onto small balconies overlooking the city, and the better rooms have views across the square toward Cologne’s famous Dom cathedral.
Hanse Stube is the hotel’s famous French restaurant, and Taku is the surprisingly hip Asian fusion restaurant, a local favorite with surprisingly modern, minimal décor. Less surprising is the Piano Bar, quite the sort of classic mahogany-paneled hotel bar you’d expect from an old-fashioned place like the Excelsior Hotel Ernst. Leisure facilities include a well-equipped fitness center, a sauna and steam bath, and spa treatments courtesy of Marga Inveen’s “Studio de Beauté.”
