From a first glance at the Firsthotel Kong Frederik, it’s easy to get the impression of a hotel that’s a bit on the buttoned-up side. But to go looking for what foreigners call Danish Modern design is, in present-day Copenhagen, something of a fool’s errand. For some time now, the prevailing aesthetic trend has been toward something that admits of a bit more coziness, a bit more rustic flavor, a slightly more eclectic approach to the mixing and matching of historical influences and styles.
And so it is here. The Kong Frederik mixes traditional luxury-hotel style with a playfully homey edge — a soft one, that is. Rich, dark wood mixes with rich, dark fabrics, and the atmosphere is equal parts business-hotel tranquil and boutique-hotel vibrant. The location is central, alongside the city’s central retail district and the famous Tivoli gardens — and the roof terrace has a view to prove it, taking in acre after acre of red-tiled rooftops. The rooms are well-composed and more than comfortable enough, and the suites add espresso machines and private outdoor terraces.
The only curveball, if you can even call it that, is the restaurant — The Italian (no points for guessing the cuisine) serves pizzas and pastas, made with painstaking, typically Danish attention to detail, in a room that’s carefully modeled after a rustic Italian trattoria.

What I liked:
Location was good, and it was great that we could get bikes from the hotel. The restaurant attached is really good.
What the hotel could do better:
The evening staff weren't overly friendly but the morning girls made up for that, they were great. I expected more from the rooms, the bathrooms could do with a refurb ideally.
