Change the name to Français Plantation and you're at least halfway to understanding what François Plantation is all about. Saint-Barthélémy of course is in the West Indies, but culturally it's a lot closer to France, and these cottages, amid tropical gardens surrounding the old plantation house, are all classic colonial chic, more elegant by half than what you'll find in the English-speaking parts of the Caribbean — expect four-poster beds, hardwood floors, mahogany furniture, marble bathrooms, and a complete absence of the sort of goofy-casual tropical kitsch that's so prevalent elsewhere.

Unlike some of the other classics of St. Barths, François Plantation isn't particularly near the beach. Here you'll trade the sound of nearby surf for stunning hilltop views; most of the cottages look out over the ocean, and the view from the infinity pool is really very close to infinite. The mountaintop seclusion, you may have guessed, is a big part of the charm — with just a dozen villas, the atmosphere is intimate bordering on insular, and the only strangers you'll see are diners lured up the hill to La Table de Plantation, which, fortunately for the hotel's semi-captive audience, happens to be one of the island's best.
