As Da Nang jumps with both feet into the tourism market, this joint deserves extra points for restraint and composure. Glossy resort options are popping up all over the place and Fusion Maia, by contrast, remains always on the side of good taste, with its sexy, clean lines and unobtrusive, gabled pavilions.

To begin with, every suite has its own pool. The unfussy interiors are spare yet warm, and blend seamlessly with outdoor areas. The dark stone of the pool and terrace, set against the minimalist white architecture, creates a dramatic backdrop for a few well-chosen furnishings, and the package is taut and complete.

Also worth noting is that here at Fusion Maia all spa services are included. A bevy of body-reviving, -rejuvenating and -replenishing treatments are performed in similarly seductive facilities, and this all makes leaving the hotel something of a difficult decision. The dining options may further compel guests to debate the merits of venturing further afield. The main dining room, Five, executes high-end pan-Asian fare while Tonic Lounge pulls off everything from martinis to high tea with equal aplomb.

At some point the spell really should be broken, and the outside world of Da Nang and environs embraced. Graced with a superb beach, this stretch of coastline could stop at that and make for a fine destination. But couple that with easy proximity to Hoi An, My Son ruins, the monuments of Hue, and of course the vibrant city of Da Nang itself, and you have a winning combo.
