Far from the sprawling capital, George Town lies on the east coast of Penang Island, which, to give you a taste of the local geography, happens to be the next island down from Phuket. It’s by no means a big city, but it is a picturesque one, and to put things in perspective, nobody ever complained that Kuala Lumpur was too small. Its moderate size and mix of landscapes makes it one of Asia’s most livable cities — and for a taste of George Town life, you could do much worse than the G Hotel, presiding over the city’s central Gurney Drive.
From inside the G there’s no sense at all that this is a small town. The atmosphere is cosmopolitan and the style is contemporary, the rooms crisp and modern, and while they might not scale the absolute heights of luxury, they’re certainly more than comfortable enough. The third floor is the site of the open-air pool deck, which will occupy a fair proportion of any guest’s stay, and the gym and spa are just inside. Add a small handful of restaurants and lounges and you’ve got a remarkably complete package — an introduction to George Town’s nightlife, close access to its best restaurants and shopping — including everything from a high-end mall to a street-food bazaar — and all this a stone’s throw from the city’s financial district.

What I liked:
The reception area looks great, but....
What the hotel could do better:
Honestly, this hotel was apparently converted from an apartment. So the rooms were not exactly like typical hotel rooms. My club floor room was big but bare! Lots of empty space. Service was subpar. Staff were unsmiley, unattentive.
