Our new Tablet Spy program offers the chance to get early looks at the most promising new hotels. If you’re willing to take the risks associated with staying in a hotel that’s not officially open yet — unfinished spaces, noisy construction, inexperienced service — then you’ll be rewarded with deep pre-opening discounts, and the chance to help decide whether the finished hotel will earn a place on Tablet Hotels.

The sequel to the original Gansevoort, in New York’s Meatpacking district, is understating its situation a bit — it’s not in Tribeca or the Financial District but in Miami Beach, over a thousand miles to the south.

Ironically the Gansevoort South is at the north end of the Collins Avenue hotel row, which gives it plenty of space to spread its wings. With 334 guest rooms across 18 floors, it’s decidedly un-cramped, and the height is used to great advantage. Just as in the New York version, the Gansevoort South is centered around a rooftop pool lounge — in this case with views of the Atlantic and the Miami skyline.

It’s not cheap, but what you get for your money is rather impressive: not just the boutique-issue iPod docking stations and 40-inch high-definition televisions (which are nice enough, don’t get us wrong) but also the gym and spa by David Barton and the multiple bars and restaurants, including an Asian restaurant by Philippe Chow and—any day now—the long-promised Miami version of STK, the New York steakhouse.

Like the original, this Gansevoort goes out of its way to cultivate a members’-club atmosphere — selling condo units certainly doesn’t hurt. Prime oceanfront location, sparkling modern design, and a vibrant built-in nightlife; add it all up and it’s the very picture of the modern luxury boutique.

    I Liked

I loved the big rooms and having a choice between 2 pools and the beach.

What the hotel could do better

I found it difficult to use the TV. It takes a few seconds for channels to change, which was very annoying.

the location and the friendly service

What the hotel could do better

the breakfast is too expensive for the quality...and they should have complimentary coffee as opposed to charging 5$ a coffee, that was ridiculous...also we asked for an extra slice of bread for lunch, and they charged us 5$ without advising us, had we known we would have said no, or ordered another dish all together???

    I Liked

    Guess I just liked everything.

I got upgraded when checked in, staff was very friendly. Room was very spacious and nicely decorated. After spending days on the cruise ship it was very welcome to have a bit (read: a lot) more space for my things and for myself. Room felt even too big at first, especially bathroom..

Rooftop bar and pool had an amazing view, beach area seeing from rooftop looked very nice (as mentioned weather was not the best so I did not have chance to enjoy it).

On the first night we had a dinner and drinks at Phillipe´s- lovely food! Danced night away at Louis´..

Only dissapontment was weather but I guess there is nothing that staff at Gansevoort would not have done if they only could have had a chance.

What the hotel could do better

    Nothing to dislike.

If only.. if they´d have been able to improve the weather during my stay but I think it is/was not humanly possible..

The rooms were huge compared to other South Beach hotels. They were also comfy and cozy versus the cold stark designs of many other South Beach hotels.

What the hotel could do better

    Nothing.

    I Liked

Very much like the NYC original, a good combination of large, comfortable, state-of-the art rooms with one of the town's hippest rooftop bars.

The bathroom alone was the size of other, equally priced hotel rooms is stayed in at South Beach.

What the hotel could do better

The Gansevoort South still lacks any soul or character. Partially due to it's location, surrounded by building sites, a car rental lot and an abandoned motel. It lacks a good in-house restaurant (P Chow is only accessible by leaving the building) and a bar in the lobby.

But would recommend it anytime for a business stay.

I liked the adult pool....probably the highlight of the trip. great music playing, good looking girls, the actual landscaping is very well thought of.

What the hotel could do better

When i mean bad service i mean the waitress taking 1 hour to deliver 1 smoothie....true strory....(which they actually sent to my room for some reason.....twice!) You call housekeeping they arrive 35-45 mins later. But i expected this...if you want real service go to the UAE.
