Staying on La Rambla may ensure proximity to Barcelona’s waterfront, but at a price: the ubiquity of the tourist-trap tapas bars and fluorescent-lit souvenir shops quickly begins to detract from the charm of the old pedestrian streets. A ten-minute stroll (or five-euro cab ride) away in a quieter section of town is Granados 83, a fashionable 77-room hotel that’s pleasantly removed from the madness.

An impressive restoration effort turned an old neoclassical hospital building into a modern boutique hotel centering around a glass-enclosed courtyard. Rich and unusual textures lend character to Granados 83’s spaces: red marble and steel details frame the entryway, the spacious lobby is laid with cool black and white stone, marble-edged corridors lead into rooms with exposed brick walls and raw leather headboards.

Many of the suites are split-level lofts with African zebrawood floors, oversized bathrooms outfitted in white marble, leather sofas, and wireless internet capability. Buddhist art bedecks the walls, sliding doors conceal a flat-screen television in each room, and an innovative lighting system offers enough dimming and brightening features to flatter even the most jet-lagged of faces. Über-modern, yes, but not stuffy: the staff welcomes dogs, serves breakfast until 1pm, and understands that you need recommendations for paella spots and flamenco venues, just like everyone else.

Two restaurants, one Mediterranean and the other Asian-influenced, serve up the standard classics-with-a-gourmet-twist cuisine. In warmer weather, the latter serves by the pool, which isn’t big enough for much more than a quick dip, but is pretty to look at with a drink in hand at sunset.

Great location, nicely stylish lobby and public spaces, liked the roof top bar. Staff was very helpful and responsive.

What the hotel could do better

The room was on the small side and the bed was not particularly comfortable. Housekeeping was pretty haphazard - no turn down service our first night, left a dirty glass on the counter for two days. Hotel offered complimentary coffee or tea for early risers, but no one ever came and picked up the door hanger request. No information on the hotel's features in the room so we had to figure out for ourselves that there was a roof-top bar (and how to get there) - same goes for the gym and pool. We didn't learn there was a restaurant in the hotel (or its hours) until our last day.

Sophistication of the rooms, staff, service, and location.

What the hotel could do better

Our room's internet was broken and the internet service in the lobby was not free of charge to guests. The hotel offers a public computer with internet access beneath the lobby, but others are competing to use it. Offer free internet throughout the hotel for guests. People want pain-free cyberspace. There were no steam irons or ironing boards in the rooms, nor did the hotel offer any. Hotel laundry and ironing services are very expensive.

i loved the location. enough distance from la rambla but close enough.

What the hotel could do better

the room was a bit scuffed up. the shower was difficult to get into. the single interior rooms have no dirent sunlight. there was an emergency light in my room that stayed on all night. it was not possible to turn it off. the photo of the pool was misleading. the real life pool is the size of a whirlpool.

The design is great, the rooms are good size, and the materials make it feel very cozy but with a sharp design. Is very well located in a nice neighborhood, you can walk everywhere or take the subway only two blocks away.

What the hotel could do better

The AC is very noisy, impossible to sleep with no ear plugs. Also one of the only two small elevators did not work the whole time we stayed there, at check out time it took a while to be able to bring our luggage downstairs.

Everything about this hotel and its sister property, Hotel Urban in Madrid, are exactly what we look for when choosing a hotel; stylish, great location, excellent service, modern luxury. We have the means to stay anywhere and as we are in our early 30's we perfer not to stay in a stuffy old money hotel, if that is you as well this is a great fit. Close enough to all of the tourist attactions yet far enough away to truely enjoy Barcelona and feel like you live there.

What the hotel could do better

That we didn't stay longer, well and there is some construction going on directly across the street but no noise issues that I remember.

the decor, and the atmosphere. Perfect location.

What the hotel could do better

The individual room I got was small, very near the elevators. The bed was small and the room was very dark, it had no sunlight. And it was EURO 130, a rip-off to be honest.

The roof top terrace (with pool) is peaceful and secluded - perfect place for a light breakfast purchased from the bakery across the street. Lots of fun restaurants in vicinity of the hotel.

What the hotel could do better

This hotel has some rooms with windows to the interior of the hotel. I was able to switch rooms but would certainly have disliked a room without direct day light ... I might find such a room acceptable for a business trip on which I don't spend much time in the room, but not for a pleasure trip.
