Grand Hotel Nord-Pinus
Place du Forum
Arles, France
Style: Contemporary Classic
Atmosphere: Quiet

It’s been a long time since Provence was unspoiled and uncomplicated — today’s Provence experience is a mediated one, a sort of collective fantasy, mutually constructed by local landowners and generations of tourists British and otherwise. It’s a problem if you’re on a quest for authenticity, but if you’re able to let go a little, it’s a fantasy that’s well worth participating in.
The Nord-Pinus is steeped in history, don’t misunderstand — in a previous life it played host to the likes of Hemingway and Henry James, as well as any number of top bullfighters — but it’s steeped in fantasy as well. This is the sort of place that looks more curated than decorated, wide-ranging antiques and oddball furnishings adding up to an atmosphere of rugged romance, far from the stereotypical soft edges of Provence hotels, and photos of guests past line the walls, from Picasso to Jean Cocteau.
Guest rooms are tucked into every corner of the house, and vary widely, some overlooking the Place du Forum, one complete with a prominent balcony for when you feel the need to make a public appearance. Traditional comforts include massive wrought-iron beds and vast windows, and each room is packed with old books, eclectic artworks and various conversation pieces.
A lounge full of rich leather armchairs and an al fresco restaurant make for plenty of chances to soak in the atmosphere and absorb the history of the place, and the Place du Forum is a good start for exploring Arles, whether your tastes run to Roman architecture or non-violent Provence-style bullfighting. It’s all of it a bit of a show, to be sure — but an enjoyable one nevertheless.

What the hotel could do better
Nothing to dislike.
These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
