Time was, in the early years of the last century, the Pont Royal was a haunt for literary types — this, of course, back when Paris was the destination of choice for writers in any language. Today it’s known for creation of a different sort; not only is it an intimate 75-room luxury boutique hotel, but it’s the home of the Atelier de Joël Robuchon, the workshop-restaurant where one of France’s culinary heroes practices his craft.
The Pont Royal’s rooms are bigger, brighter, airier than the typical Parisian lodging, even toward the top end of the market. The Saint Germain des Prés location is a fine one, and the views from the upper floors are improbably scenic. Service is well-oiled, and the facilities are top-notch — in short, it’s an absolutely classic Paris hotel, no surprises, and sometimes classic is what you’re in the mood for.
What is surprising and ultimately unique about the Pont Royal is the Atelier de Joël Robuchon. It’s a high-end restaurant, featuring world-class cooking, but with a couple of experimental angles. First, no tables: diners pull up to something like a sushi bar or lunch counter, which winds its way around a central open kitchen — perfect for solo diners. And there are no dinner reservations, at all, for anyone — it’s strictly first-come first-served, with patrons lining up out into the night for their elaborate multi-course meals.

What I liked:
I chose the Hotel Pont Royal after hours of research and narrowing on various sites. The Tablet reviews and Table Plus benefits were the main reason we chose this hotel.
The location is amazing, a great neighborhood within walking distance to many shops, cafes, the Metro, Musee D'Orsay and the Louve are all within walking distance.
Our room was a Deluxe room facing Rue du Bac, it had large windows with a small balcony and looked out over the neighborhood, very nice. It was very quiet as well when the windows were closed. The room was small for American standards but worked fine for our trip. There was a king bed, actually two twin beds somehow secured together, so there was a bit of the "valley" in the middle which became a bit of a laugh during our stay. The bed was a bit hard, and could use a soft foam topper, the pillows were great and the bedding was nice.
Our bathroom had a tub and shower which was nice, the bathroom is only large enough for one person, but there are plugs and a mirror in the main room so one person can get ready there as well. The toiletries were very highly perfumed so I could not use them, so I went next door to get a less scented soap. Nice robes and slippers were a warm welcome.
The concierge was always very helpful, gave us a map with areas marked and directed us to two of our dinners, one was at a little Italian spot nearby and it was our best meal of the trip! Le Perron in case you want to try it.
When we would ask for a cab, they would always make sure we knew where to go and how long it would take so that we ordered the car with enough notice.
Hotel Pont Royal made our trip wonderful and we look forward to a repeat visit.
What the hotel could do better:
Beds could be more comfy, need a soft topper or new mattresses.
