The interior of the Yucatán Peninsula is a side of Mexico that’s not often seen by casual tourists, who tend to stick to the beaches and the cities. It’s a shame, really — the charms of the Mayan country are a worthy alternative to the same old sand and surf.

If you’re up for it, though, the best way to see the Mayan country is from one of the hacienda hotels, the vast old sisal plantations converted into surprisingly intimate contemporary luxury hotels. And if you’re here to see Chichén Itzá, the big daddy of the Mayan ruins, then you couldn’t do better than the Hacienda San Jose, an easy drive away, just a hundred kilometers from the ancient city.

This old plantation, once operating on the scale of a small town, now holds just fifteen guest rooms — space, obviously, is at no shortage. Beds are sprawling, ceilings are high, and though the rooms are newly renovated (the tile floors positively sparkle) the look is as authentic as can be. Acre upon acre of gardens and grounds await, and include an old wedding chapel and a restaurant occupying one of the old factory buildings. These days management is courtesy of the Starwood group, ensuring the kind of professional service that will have you feeling like the lord (or lady) of the manor.

How to get there:

Hacienda San Jose is a 45 minute drive from Merida International Airport and a 2 1/2 hour drive from Cancun. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
