Hacienda Santa Rosa
KM 129 Carretera Merida Champeche
Santa Rosa, Yucatan, Mexico
Style: Traditional Elegance
Atmosphere: Secluded
11 Rooms
It’s hard to imagine any place more at odds with the stereotypical Mexican holiday experience than the Hacienda Santa Rosa. If you’re after a surf-side beach hotel or a glam city boutique, look elsewhere; the Santa Rosa is deep in the heart of the Mayan country, at the west end of the Yucatan peninsula — close by to some astonishingly well-preserved (and under-traveled) ruins, and truth be told, not much else.
And by contrast with the enormous high-rise hotels in Cancun, the Santa Rosa’s seclusion suits us just fine, as does its small scale — just eleven rooms. These are either suites in the main hacienda building, spacious beneath eighteen-foot ceilings, with massive wooden double doors and checkered tile floors, or else Mayan Villas, traditionally-styled freestanding Mayan palapas where king beds hang suspended on ropes from the ceiling.
The villas and most of the suites come with private plunge pools, while the remaining three share a single larger pool, itself distinct from the Hacienda’s main swimming pool, the likeliest place to spot your fellow guests out in public during the day.
No television and no nearby city means life at the Hacienda Santa Rosa moves at what may be an unfamiliar pace. There are acres of grounds to explore, and nearby archaeological treasures to survey, but the diversions of conventional tourism are few and far between — which is, as far as we’re concerned, entirely the point.
How to get there:
Hacienda Santa Rosa is approximately a 55 minute drive from Merida International Airport. Please contact customerservice@tablethotels.com to arrange airport transfers.
