Hacienda Sepulveda is a country estate located just outside the small central Mexican city of Lagos de Moreno. Originally a 17th-century ranch, the property has been transformed by the Serrano family — owners for three generations and counting — into a rural boutique hotel that retains much of the original architecture that made the hacienda a landmark of old-world refinement. Situated within a fertile landscape where the family’s horses still graze, this 23-room hotel is a lovingly decorated homage to rustic sophistication.

Each room has been given a different name, and that isn’t just frippery — the architecture is as varied as the tapestries and antiques that distinguish the rooms. Among the master suites, Casa Santiago stands out as the obvious choice for couples on a romantic getaway, with its abundance of candles and its marble Jacuzzi, not to mention Cupid presiding over the bed in lamp form. Besides its original stonework and earthy 18th-century paintings, the Don Toribio suite features a secret passageway to the roof. No children under 13 are allowed at this hotel, but we imagine that a secret passage turns many an adult into a wide-eyed kid on a spy mission.

Concessions to modern life are incorporated throughout, though with surroundings as lush as these, we’d recommend spending as little time with the free wi-fi as possible. Dinner is served in a converted barn with an arched ceiling that reaches its apex fifty meters above the floor. Guests in search of nightlife will have to travel outside the boundaries of the ranch, but there’s plenty of fun to be had with the extensive tequila menu — devise your own pairings with the authentic family recipes.
