The Hard Rock in Las Vegas conjures up images of bikini babes, guitar riffs, and blue cocktails glowing in the night. It's of course already had its moment on the silver screen—in the monstrous Nicolas Cage vehicle Con Air, runaway convicts smash their plane into the neon guitar atop the roof.
You may be disappointed therefore to find it somewhat subdued. In fact, the Hard Rock Hotel is more old-style Hollywood than new-school Vegas, and quite unlike any of the tourist packed Hard Rock Cafés. First of all, it's small by local standards—just 600-odd rooms, none of which have circular beds or mirrors on the ceiling. Instead, they are decorated in a masculine chocolate palette—more university club than casino—with French windows that open onto the strip. Bathrooms are old-fashioned, with wall-to-wall marble and rectangular soaking tubs.
The casinos and nightclub are rather low-key. So are the three restaurants. Owner Peter Morton's fondest spots, perhaps, are the nostalgic Steakhouse and the Counter—the first a tribute to 1960s Chicago and to his father, restaurateur Alvin, the second a salute to the soda fountains of yesteryear. Both are retro, and a touch melancholy. More fun perhaps is the Japanese culinary phenomenon Nobu. Maybe you're thinking that black miso marinated cod doesn't exactly go with rock and roll, but it provides a welcome break from excess.
As for entertainment, the Hard Rock hotel is certainly rocking enough to coax performances out of everyone from Erykah Badu to Blur. Maybe they couldn't resist all that sushi. Or the Spa with its mineral baths and aromatherapy massages. Or the fabulous pool: seven acres, with imported sand, and even a casino in middle. It's the perfect venue to hang around for an afternoon, grab a game of blackjack, and check out who's checking in. A lot of the Hard Rock guests—many of whom hail from LA—genuinely look very good without much on. And that's a thing you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere else in Vegas.
