Hayman Island, in the Whitsunday Islands of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, is one of the most extraordinary places in the world, a spectacular setting, teeming with sea life and natural wonders. To spend the night in a shack or a tent on one of the island's white coral beaches would be an unforgettable enough experience. But the Hayman Island Resort is a wonder unto itself, a luxury resort experience as impressive as its surroundings. Now internationally recognized, it cost its creator his fortune, somehow a badge of honor for a decadent resort. After all, you have come all the way to the Great Barrier Reef; it is only fair, then, that the resort goes all out to ensure that your stay will be a memorable one. Hayman offers not just tennis but squash, table tennis, archery, croquet, badminton, snooker, billiards, and golf - putting and driving on-island, an eighteen-hole course on the mainland. How does one reach the mainland? By helicopter, naturally.Let's not forget about the surrounding Coral Sea and the Reef. A lesser resort would certainly offer diving, waterskiing, windsurfing, and some sort of sailing tour. Hayman Island offers these to start, and then an entire post-graduate curriculum of water activities, from diving and snorkeling to sailing trips, private day or overnight cruises, speedboat drops, game fishing and bottom fishing, even whale watching. Oh yes, and helicopter tours, seaplane trips, and the "Reef Dancer" semi-submersible vessel, for a look at the reef's undersea life. Those guests who are acrophobic, technologically challenged, or merely resistant to guided activities, may wish to simply rent a motorized dinghy and freely explore the surrounding waters, in the style of Captain Cook.
If one is beginning to sense a theme here, it is that of a near-overkill wealth of options. Not just a robust selection of activities, but every activity imaginable. Not two or three restaurants but six, and two bars, and the option to dine not only in one's room but by a waterfall or a garden as well. Not one but two white coral beaches. Not just a honeymoon package but a wedding package too.
In short, a phenomenal hotel experience. This is an absolutely top-notch resort, with unparalleled service, in a location that is second to none. The mind reels at the notion of somehow improving this place, but rest assured that if you can think of something that the staff has not already thought of (balloon tours? dolphin rides?), it will be a standard offering by the time you return.

What I liked:
The location is great and the hotel has good bones; with a little work it could be great. Lani at the Oriental was awesome.
What the hotel could do better:
I was in Penthouse 4 which was a disappointment. Some rooms had been renovated unfortunately mine had not and was cira 1980. For the price I certainly expected nicer and up to date furnishings. In general the hotels seems to need a refresh. The pools had mold around the tiles; the internet service was challenging, and some of the common area furnishing looked like they had seen better days. It seems the hotel is short staffed and management appears to be absent . Service at the pools and bars is painfully slow and the housekeeping could be improved (I found someone’s dirty sock under the cushion of my couch which again points to management’s inattention to detail).

What I liked:
Location and island itself. Very beautiful.
People working there are nice. Very nice diving and diving team. They are trying to do the best.
What the hotel could do better:
A lot of things
1. Renovate rooms and hotel itself
2. Renovate pool areas
3. Significantly improve management
All orders are placed through the concierge at the main lobby. Every morning there were at least 10-12 guests waiting for one concierge. (we dropped it off an left).
Transportation service withing island does not work properly. every third ride we should wait for club car to arrive.
Everything is very expensive without any opportunities (bottle of water - 11 USD)
Transportation from the island was not pleasant too. For more then 600 USD (two way 50 minutes trip for two on a comfortable boat) they brought us to the abandoned airport more then 2 hours before the flight at the early morning. We asked for later transportation, but they told us that there were other guests leaving 1 hour earlier. In fact there were no any flights earlier at all, airport was closed, ad there were 2 more guests with the same situation.
