Martha’s Vineyard is the kind of destination that can feel a bit closed off to outsiders. It’s a place that’s perhaps better known for vacation homes and vacation estates than it is for hotels. But there are some gems to be found, among them Hob Knob, a charming 19th-century house in Edgartown that’s been converted into a small and intimate 17-room boutique-style hotel.
It’s a remarkably well-preserved piece of Gothic Revival architecture. The interior style is classic meets contemporary, traditional in character but all sparkling new. The focus is on creature comforts, with heaping king beds, plush robes, high-tech in-room amenities (iPod docks, LCD televisions with DVD players) and plenty of space. And many much bigger hotels would envy Hob Knob’s small but well-formed spa.
It’s luxe enough to hole up in, though you probably won’t — it’s a very short walk to the center of Edgartown, not much farther to the harbor, and if you didn’t bring your own bike, Hob Knob lends beach cruisers for two-wheeled exploration. And like the best city hotels, this island guest house comes with a skilled concierge, useful indeed for arranging tables, tours and adventures that only an insider would know.

What I liked:
Great location, charming Vineyard ambiance, updated interiors, fabulous breakfast, roaring fireplace, freshly-baked cookies and tea availale in the afternoon, spa was kept open late for us to use. Free parking in the rear.
What the hotel could do better:
We went on the off-season and most restaurants were closed but the front desk was unsure which were open/closed; it would be nice if they had a general sense of the nicer restaurants that are open in the off-season. Not a big deal but would have been convenient.

What I liked:
This Inn was clean and very nicely appointed. The staff was very engaging and relaxed. This put us at ease.
What the hotel could do better:
We found the king bed to be uncomfortable due to the ridge in the middle and the length was difficult due to head and footboards. The decor and quality of the linen was superb. Therefore, I hate to complain. Unfortunately we had to sleep somewhat sideways and did not sleep well for two nights. We did not mention this to the staff.
