Another outpost of the Hospes group, a series of five-star boutique hotels across Spain, the Amerigo chooses Alicante as its home. Once a Dominican convent, later an office building and an apartment block, today it’s a bit closer to its original incarnation, offering the sort of creamy-white ascetic-luxe experience that is the Hospes group’s specialty.
Modernist interior design, here, is used not so much to liven the atmosphere as to calm the mind; plenty of white space, with dark wood accents, and furniture that welcomes rather than challenges the user. The original stone walls and arched windows of the convent lend a solemn atmosphere, a touch of the spiritual perhaps.
Cementing the Amerigo’s luxury credentials are the fitness center, complete with sauna, and the comfortably inviting public spaces—the lounge, the library and the restaurant. Most unique, though, is the surprise on the roof: a swimming pool and terrace, with a view of the Santa Bárbara castle and the surrounding rooftops of the city, a detail that makes the Amerigo not just a good hotel but a remarkable one.
The city itself is a popular destination for those traveling within Spain, with most of the guests seemingly away from Madrid for the weekend. Internationally Alicante is known more as an airline hub than a final destination, which means plentiful flights and easy traveling for those content to spend a holiday there.

What I liked:
GREAT service and help with local attractions.
What the hotel could do better:
The gym area was pretty weak - and lacking any free weight / floor mats. Some machines weren't working and most were rather old.

What I liked:
I really liked the customer service. So friendly. I do speak spanish, but not spanish from spain or Catalan, however they were very accommodating, and I had a great time!
The restaurant at the hotel -- a nice tapas restaurant -- was a bit pricey, but SO good. The wine was amazing. The service was good. I wish it stayed open a bit longer, but they were very pleasant about telling us that the kitchen was closing.
Oh, I also like the large key dongle item, it's looks like a post-modern silver dollop on the end of your key. There is no chance you are going to leave the room without it. :)
What the hotel could do better:
Everything about this hotel was so nice that I feel bad about writing anything negative. If you are reading this, please realize that it is a very VERY minor thing. The bathrooms in this hotel are of a very modern design, however the shower stall is not very functional, it does not have a lip to hold back water, and the drain doesn't drain fast enough, so you end up with water all over the bathroom floor.
One example of a hotel that does this very well, and is also a tablet hotel is the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam -- so I know this design _can_ work, it just didn't work in this particular hotel.
But again, it's very very minor, one phone call to the front desk, and they had housekeeping there in a matter of minutes, with nice fresh fluffy towels for us to use.
