The Hospes Lancaster is Paris’ most sophisticated gem: small and flawless without dazzle. Since this 1889 mansion was converted by hotelier Emile Wolf in the 1930’s, it has played host to the more refined of the celebrity set — Marlene Dietrich, Noël Coward, Grace Kelly.

And even today, under the direction of the Spanish Hospes group, the Lancaster has maintained its old style elegance. Many of Wolf’s original antiques remain, along with his collection of clocks. And paintings by a 1930s artist in residence, Boris Pastoukoff, who paid for his room and board with his portraits, still hang on the walls. The marble bathrooms have been painfully restored to their original Art Deco state, and antique sofas have been reupholstered in plain mauve, ivory, and jade silks.

Service, naturally, is impeccable — they’ll arrange your wedding via email with your mom in the States, and when you’ve lost that string of pearls in your cab, they will track it down for you. But most importantly, the Lancaster’s attraction has always been its low profile. There is no opulence here and though the staff is efficient, they are a silent, low-key presence.

Though it is steps away from the Champs-Elysées, the Lancaster is an isolated world. Its restaurant, La Table du Lancaster has a one star Michelin rating, and the Grand Salon is the perfect place to relax and enjoy light meals, tea or hot chocolate. Bliss is to be had in the garden, dramatic with its yellow and blue irises and divided by a Japanese style riverbed where you can sip your drink outdoors, in the middle of Paris no less, and be undisturbed by traffic or the ogling stares of passersby. But the best thing is to retire to one of the Lancaster’s rooftop suites, where you have your own terrace for dining, meditating, romancing, and the luxury of enjoying the most private spot in Paris in city’s most private hotel.
