It seems unlikely that any hotel could make good on a promise to shield its guests from the electrifying din of Seville’s flamenco-tinged street life. Las Casas del Rey de Baeza, though, accomplishes this, and a bit more.

From the street the hotel appears utterly traditional, a whitewashed 18th-century house in the traditional style, in the midst of Seville’s historic district. The interiors, though, are refreshingly urbane and contemporary, an island of soothing modern design in the most picturesque of settings, bathed in the southern Spanish sunlight.

Slate floors and breezy open windows keep things cool, and the softly-lit interiors are sparely decorated, iron frames supporting hefty modern beds and contemporary furnishings contrasting with the courtyard or street views. Frosted glass doors divide bathrooms from bedrooms and flat-screen televisions forcefully remind guests of their place in time.

The hotel is organized about two central courtyards, and the rooms that face inward, from private patios, are the most peaceful and quiet. Facing outward, you’ll hear a touch more of the street life but you’ll take in more sun as well.

Positively bathed in sun, though, is the most unexpected of gestures, a small rooftop pool and an adjoining terrace, from which the rooftops of the surrounding neighborhood can be surveyed. Lighter fare is served on this rooftop terrace and lunch and dinner downstairs, in the modern Andalusian restaurant.

Old world charm in a timewarp city

By whenderson1331851 based in Hong Kong

Stayed June 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

Delightful courtyard layout and pleasing relaxed ambience. Staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. Room was fine although a little small and lacking in natural light because of its ground floor location. Restaurant was fine, with excellent food and wine list, but overpriced breakfast.

I Disliked

Construction work opposite the hotel made access inconvenient at times. The location, like many in central Seville is problematic because of the maze of streets, but once you get used to it, this is part of the charm ! I was pleased we had decided NOT to drive to the hotel from the airport, which would have been impossible......

A luxurious taste of Sevilla

When you're sightseeing in the hot sun all day, it's so lovely to come back to a place like the Hospes in Sevilla. The hotel itself is charming with its patios and shuttered windows and the rooms are cool and comfortable. Pool is tiny and COLD but it's a great place for a dip at the end of the afternoon. Staff are lovely and attentive and the restaurant has the best food in the city. And if you're driving there they'll take care of your car and valet it for 16 euros a day.

I Disliked

very little

I Disliked

One particular front desk staff could have been a little more helpful and friendly but maybe it was a language barrier.

This hotel feels like home - a beautiful room, very tasteful and interesting public areas and a lovely roof top pool. The extras such as free computer, quality of breakfast and lovely products in the bathroom and a decent hairdryer are important, but also the quality of service in this hotel is very good and made my stay there very relaxed and pleasurable.

I Disliked

Nothing really - would definitely like to use hospes group of hotels again.

Charming Seville

By dperissi based in New York

Stayed June 2008

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

Las Casas del Rey was the perfect mix of old-fashioned charm and modern facilities. The building retains all the charm of of old-world Seville, but the restaurant, rooms and bathrooms are up-to-date and modern. Each room comes with an array of spa products, which was a cute little touch. The common areas are perfect for sitting and relaxing and the restaurant turned out delicious salads and dishes (it is worth eating at the hotel at least once, even though there are so many great places to eat in the city). The rooftop pool and lounge is a great, calm oasis, especially needed for the hot Seville summer. Great location in El Centro -- you are in walking distance to everything but not in a touristy area at all. I highly recommend a stay in this charming hotel.

I Disliked

The rooms are suitable, but not especially notable (though the bathroom is quite nice). The common areas more than make up for the rooms.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question.
