Budget

It’s time the world discovered there’s more to Spain than Barcelona and Madrid: Spain’s third city is heating up, with travelers from the UK in particular discovering Valencia in record numbers, and budget airlines scrambling to establish routes from all over Europe.

New hotels are appearing all the time, and one of the most noteworthy, to our eye, is the Hotel Palau del Mar, from the new nationwide Hospes group. Two 19th-century Palacete buildings have been stitched together and transformed into Valencia’s first five-star luxury boutique.

The style is utterly modern luxury, with stunning interiors in monochrome white fabrics and rich dark woods, with flat-screen televisions on the walls and sprawling bathrooms behind sliding doors. At just sixty-six rooms, oriented about central courtyards, the Palau del Mar is intimate, and quiet too, feeling less like a city hotel and more like a resort, complete with basement spa, offering a steam room and sauna in addition to an eye-popping plunge pool, set into a backdrop of dark stone.

Some stylish hotels feel a bit flimsy, but this is substantive luxury through and through, without any of the Regency furnishings or antique fabrics that usually serve as signifiers of the high life.

As for the city itself, you’re positioned at the edge of the historic city center, as near the old market as to the new designer shops. The new City of Arts and Sciences complex ensures that architecture freaks will come to see Valencia as Santiago Calatrava’s city, in much the same way that Barcelona is Gaudí’s town, or Bilbao in some small sense Gehry’s. And if you’re here to see some cutting-edge design, the Palau de la Mar may be the only hotel that measures up—there would be something inauthentic about walking over one of Calatrava’s bridges, only to check into a dismal chain hotel.

Unexpected Surprise

By Josh Beagley based in Brisbane

Stayed June 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

Pillows!! Big and ever so comfy The solid feel of the place. Lots of designery hotels feel so flimsy in places and, while there were a 1 or 2 quality problems in the room, it felt like it had a bit of soul which is lacking many places at the moment Restaurant has a fantastic breakfast

I Disliked

Bathroom was deconstructed, I guess you could say... The toilet/bidet were in a little cupboard just near the door and the shower bath etc were round the corner next to the bed. Made the space feel a little smaller than it should have been.

A great location within walking distance of so many great places to eat and things to do/see. The price was perfect and the rooms were beautiful, not to mention the level of service was amazing. I'll definitely stay here the next time I'm in Valencia.

I Disliked

They should really be more vocal about the hotel restruant as it serves an incredible dinner for a reasonable price.

Probably comparatively expensive but a superb stay for - actually - not much money at all

By gpoirier based in London

Stayed March 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

Our room was as described: bright, well appointed, quiet (except for the fireworks at fallas which no amount of double-glazing would shut out). The location was very central and handy. The staff were gracious, all spoke great english (particularly in comparison to the rest of the city) and seemed genuinely concerned that we had an enjoyable stay. Korres products in bath were a nice touch. The breakfasts were very good - huge selection of all sorts of things. 100 euros plus (which was what we paid, on a promotion) sounds like it is more than the general going rate for decent accomodation in the city - but in Paris or London you would be paying 3x that for the amenity.

I Disliked

The 'pool', whilst architectural and nice enough to look at, is about 2m wide by 8m long - it is not really for swimming and it is, admittedly, in the basement. Bar snacks/ room service and spa treatments were all very very expensive. We had a degustation dinner in the restaurant - about 3 of the 6 dishes were very good and 3 were very average. We still had a lovely time and enjoyed ourselves but the restaurant is possibly not the 'absolute must' that some suggest. Also, the tv was pretty small - too small to watch from the bed, for example.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
