Fans of contemporary-design boutique hotels are already spoiled for choice in Montreal, but most often they’re confined to the scenic-but-sleepy old quarter. The Hotel 10, by contrast, stands at the top of St. Laurent, what’s essentially the city’s main drag; maybe not where you’d stand to take a postcard photo, but right in the middle of everything you’ll want to do.
It’s an unmissable building, actually two buildings in one: the distinctive 1914 Art Nouveau residence was the first poured concrete structure in North America, and grafted to its side is the 21st-century equivalent, a grey brick monolith capped with an aluminum canopy, a striking visual contrast but a good match in spirit.
The interiors are no less striking, in concrete and glass, grey stone and metal, with spare modern furniture and just one 1914-vintage detail, a magnificent spiral staircase. Rooms differ between the old and the new building, some a toned-down Art Nouveau, others more stark beneath bare concrete ceilings, all outfitted with the lot: flat-screen televisions, wireless internet access and bathrooms straight from the showroom floor. Now open is the Suco Lounge, serving drinks and a globe-spanning small plates menu in a stylish and dramatic split-level space. It’s a perfect start to a big night out, though perhaps not ideal for a quiet night in — on weekends the nightclub’s sounds do tend to carry. Ask for a room on the quiet side if you’re a light sleeper.

What I liked:
Great location right by St. Laurent. Lots of restaurants and shopping within walking distance. Friendly front desk. Even though there are no ice machines on the floors when you call downstairs someone brings an ice bucket to your room in a matter of minutes so it wasn't inconvenient at all.
What the hotel could do better:
The ceilings are concrete- think converted loft. So there is no overhead lighting in the rooms (at least in our Diplomatic Suite) so all the light comes from lamps, which would be fine but the lamps are so dim. It was the darkest hotel room I have ever stayed in. We had to leave the closet doors open just to get the extra light from them. We also had to relocate the floor lamps to get the most light. Lighting is a problem.

What I liked:
hotel had a lot of energy and was modern. rooms had a cool concrete ceiling and some nice fixtures. liked the combination of old building and new building. Excellent location.
What the hotel could do better:
service was decent but not stellar. room was a bit cold and sparse. could use some padding under the carpet, etc. small TVs in rooms.

What I liked:
The common spaces were beautiful.
What the hotel could do better:
They need to take better care of their rooms. Paint was chipped on the walls, there were tears and stains on the curtain.
