Add another to the rolls of places in Tuscany that seem almost too amazing to be true. Here, a couple of miles outside the ancient walled city of Lucca, you’ll find the Hotel Albergo Villa Marta, a 19th-century hunting lodge lovingly restored by its husband-and-wife owners into an intimate 11-room guest house, surrounded by so many of the classic trappings of rural Tuscany that it almost seems like a put-on: rolling hills, sprawling vineyards, landscaped gardens and even a view of the San Cerbone convent.
Guest rooms are traditional in style, some with exposed beams, others with frescoed ceilings, and all furnished in a restrained antique style, not precious but just elegant. And these rooms are all new: beneath the classic veneer you’ll find modern fixtures and conveniences, including, on the ground floor, disabled-access rooms.
The views from the bedrooms take in the property’s gardens and the surrounding countryside, but a little walking reveals more, including an outdoor swimming pool and a tiny private chapel, perfect for a storybook wedding (or just for dropping hints to your spouse-to-be). A lavish breakfast is one of the Albergo Villa Marta’s particular strengths, and if you’re in a gourmet mood, wine tastings and cooking classes can be arranged. Ask for recommendations from among Lucca’s finest restaurants.
How to get there:
Exit the Firenze-mare motorway (the A12) at LUCCA OVEST. Follow the signs for PISA onto the SS12, and from there, follow the signs for the Hotel Albergo Villa Marta. After 3/4 km, in the village of San Lorenzo a Vaccoli, turn left into the Via del ponte Guasperini. After about 500 meters you will see the Albergo Villa Marta on the left.

Hotel Albergo Villa Marta
Stayed April 2009
Overall rating: Excellent
I Liked
It was a small, intimate hotel, ideally located just outside Lucca with easy access to Lucca and Pisa. Such pretty gardens with tables outside and a swimming pool. The service was charming and the staff could not do enough to help you and make sure your stay was everything you wanted. The rooms were quiet and beautifully decorated with lovely linen sheets. The breakfasts were self-service but everything was fresh and the coffee made to order. We can't wait to go back.I Disliked
Our only problem was a towel rail that worked intermittedly and sometimes it is nice to have a bath as well as a shower. Also, a kettle in the room would be a real added benefit. However, these small problems would certainly not deter us from visiting again.5 user(s) found this review helpful

a great little hotel, in lovely country right outside lucca. the room decor was a little floral for my taste but that's the aesthetic they were going for, and everything was bright and clean and well-designed. the price was excellent. staff could not have been nicer.I Disliked
rooms were a wee bit cozy.148 user(s) found this review helpful

Nice room cloe to Lucca
Stayed November 2008
Overall rating: Good
I Liked
Our room was good size (lots of floor space) and very comfortable. The lobby was small, but had a nice cool home scale and feel to it. The road our front was quite - did'nt hear any cars and our room faced that direction. We were there in November, so the pool was closed, but the pool area looked nice. The grounds were not large but were nicely landscaped for a 3-4 star hotel. The bedding was nice and corfortable, however, as one often finds in Italy, the "king" bed is really two single beds pushed together and made up as one - no problem if you and your wife/significant other take to each side of the bed, otherwise... The decor in the public spaces and rooms is fresh and nice, but the rooms paint color was a little bold I thought. The bath was ample size, really nice large framless glass door shower - could have used more or better lighting. Overall, I thought we got great value in a small hotel which was close to Lucca (about 10-12 min I would guess). The breakfast was good - typical Italian but also hot items like eggs, bacon... They seemed happy to keep bringing me cappichinos at no extra charge. The staff was very friendly and we had no issues, certainly would reccomend this hotel to others.I Disliked
The front desk is in the lobby and has a closet of a back office which is open to the lobby- not to flash. The plumbing fixtures and toilet assories were sort of cheap - with nice fixtures and stone rather than tile vanity top, it could have been 5 star quality - just a little on the lower quality side on the fixtures overall.682 user(s) found this review helpful
