You couldn’t get much more modern or more Swedish than this. Named after the city’s founder, the Birger Jarl is the ultimate in Stockholm chic, with its kiss-me red lobby and birch wood paneling that makes even the most jaded of interior decorators catch their breath. Every piece of furniture is custom designed by someone native, as are the staff uniforms. Downstairs, the lobby acts as a rotating gallery for local artists. It is, quite literally, this stylish city’s symbol.

Twelve of the rooms are personal creations of architects, both famous and up-and-coming, including the star of Swedish modernism Thomas Sandell, so hip he just recently designed a house for Wallpaper. The rooms are, if you will, live-in works of art, so it is definitely worth your while to stay in one, and get a peek at the others. In one, soft light sculptures are beamed on the walls. In another, photographs of a beech forest slide open to reveal windows, and the Stockholm urban vista outside. The much-lauded “Birger Suite,” with its black lacquer headboards, somber geometry, and rice paper lamps, reminds us of a samurai’s reception hall. On the other hand, our favorite Thomas Sandell room, with its all-white walls covered in brightly colored sprinkles, is oddly reminiscent of a nursery.

But the concept doesn’t stop here. Book a “design package” and you’ll get a very handy pass to the major museums, together with a discount for the best showrooms. In fact, Birger Jarl is so cool, it would almost be chilly; but it isn’t, thanks to the staff. Swedish hospitality is unpretentious, frank, and friendly. Should you choose to stroll through in a tee-shirt and jeans, they’ll help you very nicely with your backpack. Besides, there’s also attention to those less aesthetic conveniences that are necessary in making any hotel stay a treat: like ISDN connections, generous bathroom accessories, and a gym that overlooks the rooftops of Noormalm.

You are walking distance from virtually everything worth seeing in Stockholm. Breakfast is on the house, and is one of the most fantastic smorgasbords in all of Sweden—pickled herring, cold meats, scrambled eggs, cheese. So feel free to act playful in Sandell’s polka-dotted creation. For at the Birger Jarl, high design and low-key relaxation are not mutually exclusive notions.

Location is handy and it is a nice neighbourhood.

What the hotel could do better

Upon arrival, the computer system was down so I could not get the room straightaway. I was eventually given a key - to a room where someone was already staying. After going back to the reception I was given a new room - that was not cleaned. After a while, someone from the front desk showed me to a room that was unoccupied and clean, but didn't even offer to help me carry the bags.

Pretty good location within walking distance of several key areas.

What the hotel could do better

Lots of hype about the design of the hotel but it's getting pretty tired. Was full of bus tour groups which made for cafeteria mayhem at breakfast and caused the hotel to run out of hot water one morning. Room was also missing a drape on the window.

We stayed in one of the "decorator" rooms on the 7th floor, which was unique, and deliberately quirky, but not really very attractive. The location in a residential area north of downtown has a number of good restaurants within a block or two (including a great place right across the street), is two quick subway stops from the center of the city, and is probably preferable to the office areas of town that empty out at night. We appreciated the generous breakfast buffet, with a wide range of items for both American and European tastes. The basement media center/library/conference facility is considerably more attractive than the lobby.

What the hotel could do better

In terms of design and creature comforts, the Birger Jarl is nothing special. The lobby is fairly ordinary design-wise, and the room furnishings, bed linens, bathroom fittings, and bathroom supplies were just okay at best. It's on par with a mid-level business hotel, and not consistent with the high level of design and comfort at other Tablet-listed properties. For someone who wants to tour the city, the location is not especially close to the interesting sights or shopping.

Hotel was clean and natural feeling. Rooms were simple but comfortable and I had a great balcony that gave me a nice view of the area. Breakfast had a nice selection and was quick & efficient which I needed as a business traveler. Location was close to many restaurants and shops. Good for business traveler.

What the hotel could do better

Elevators were slow. Only a few TV stations so not much to watch. That is it though.

The service was nice and everything was clean, the location is good, you can walk to the centre.

What the hotel could do better

It is not actually a design hotel in terms of a modern, up-to-date style. It is rather design seen in the 80's and it hasn't changed much since then.
