A few short years ago the Habita group was a promising upstart, bringing the design revolution to Mexico, which sorely needed it. Now they’re a bona fide mini-empire, and as they’ve hit their stride, their approach has grown looser and more confident. For proof one need look no further than the Hotel Boca Chica, in Acapulco, of all places – it’s a classic resort town that became a victim of its own success, and it’s gasping for a new life.
Revitalizing a tired destination is a tall order, and here they’ve done it not through high-style overkill, but with a sense of humor, embracing Acapulco’s heyday. They’ve left the exterior of this classic Fifties hotel intact, and if it looks like something that would have been in an Elvis movie, that’s because it was. The interiors, however, have come a long way. They’re stylish and contemporary, but more classic beach-blanket mellow than desperately nightclub-chic — they’re open to the breeze, ideal for a bit of lounging, with hammocks tied up outside.
There’s a well-equipped gym and spa, and a surfeit of outdoor space, from the pool deck to the marina to the beach. It’s not all idyllic tranquility, of course. A bar and disco are a necessity in Acapulco, and here the Boca Chica, as always, gets the tone exactly right.

What I liked:
Great design, stepping back to luxury of Acapulco in 1950s.
Small hotel so service levels good and not overwhelmed with people
Already been back twice - the perfect weekend break
What the hotel could do better:
Very little and overall I had a wonderful stay.
Only slight gripe was that both times we visited wi-fi internet access in the rooms was poor and we needed to keep asking for the system to be reset. An engineer was due to attend so hopefully rectified soon.

What I liked:
First of all, the staff were really kind and tried their best and often went out of their way to help. The bartenders were generous! The beds were remarkably comfortable. I love the bath products!
The view from our suite was really beautiful and we loved the hammock on the balcony (and the balcony in general!)
The granola was amazing. I enjoyed the breakfasts and sushi as well.
What the hotel could do better:
We had to move our room. First we were in an Amigo room that has two double beds, but that faced a very noisy public beach and a public bathroom that smelled very bad. We were upgraded to a suite and thankfully my friend and I didn't mind sharing the bed. The private space in the room was limited-- the showers are in a corner and are only cordoned off by a shower curtain. The hook up for the iPods didn't work in all the rooms. When the restaurant got busy (particularly breakfast/brunch on the weekends) service was hard to come by.
We were under the impression that there was a private beach but discovered this was not the case. Had I known that we would be primarily at the pool at this vacation I probably wouldn't have selected Acapulco.
While there were staff that were always willing to help, the feedback or the help wasn't always effective. Certainly they were nice and there were a couple who were really great but sometimes when things needed tending to or fixing, they didn't get done.
