The charming, old-fashioned Hotel Bülow Residenz is possibly the finest small hotel in Dresden. It is located in the traditional city center, next to a monument to August the Strong, and its carefully restored façade itself dates back to August's time (1730, to be precise). The interior, of course, is a bit younger - the hotel underwent a complete renovation in 1993. There may have been some temptation to update the design, but if so, it was successfully resisted - the décor remains traditional, though not stuffy.

Services are, however, modern - rooms are equipped with satellite television and modem connections. The rooms themselves are quite spacious, as are the bathrooms, and elegantly appointed in a Baroque style to match the building's façade.

There is a restaurant, Caroussel, designed in the same Baroque style, a formal fine dining restaurant with an impressive selection of French and German wines. Be warned, though, that the restaurant closes on Sundays and Mondays - but in the heart of Dresden, alternate arrangements should not be difficult to make.
