Architecturally-minded visitors to Barcelona can’t help but have high expectations these days — it seems every building is either an ultra-modern masterpiece or a centuries-old treasure. These expectations are more than satisfied by Hotel CRAM, a bit of both worlds: a tour de force of modern interior architecture behind an elegant 19th-century facade.
Here modern design doesn’t mean monochrome, either. The obligatory white walls and polished light hardwood floors are livened with splashes of color, from blood red and rust orange to subdued gun-metal grey. The bedrooms are on that highly desirable line between funky and futuristic — they’re sleek, to be sure, but eminently habitable, with plentiful natural sunlight, sprawling platform beds and all the modern must-haves, including 32-inch LCD televisions and wireless internet access throughout.
An outdoor swimming pool offers a break from the heat and the crowds of central Barcelona, while the lobby bar is the perfect transition into this city’s legendary nightlife. Most fortuitous, though, is the fact that the hotel just happens to be the new home of the Michelin-starred Gaig restaurant, where the chef of the same name serves his signature fare, a sort of back-to-basics cuisine with an emphasis on traditional flavors and stripped-down preparations. Four blocks from the Passeig de Gracia and six from the Plaça Cataluña and the Ramblas.

What I liked:
Restaurant - the Gaig Restaurant is in the hotel and was absolutely incredible. I'm a big foodie and only booked this after booking the hotel, but what an amazing meal. The inventiveness, presentation, preparation, and mix of flavours was great - best meal of a week-long trip. The service wasn't the best I've seen, but well worth it. Bottle of cava, 2 glasses of wine, and 3 courses for EUR 240 including healthy tip.
Bathroom - Big, clean, lots of room
Bedroom - use of space, very cool and easy-to-use lighting (and lots of it)
Generally - like the style of the hotel, and close to the main strip of shops/bars/restos of La Rambla (a nice walk of about 15 min) but not by everyone partying until 3, 4, 5, 6am
What the hotel could do better:
- Closeness of two beds (basically slept in the same bed with a colleague) but I moved to another hotel part-way through my week and learned that's the way it's done in Barcelona.
- Lounge in lobby wasn't used so wasn't very inviting. (Surprisingly, I never visited the pool on the top floor. Hmm.)
- Business travellers - if you need a desk, this may be hard to take. The small rooms require space-saving cupboards, etc. The desk flips down and you have to use the bed as a chair. If you can work on the bed or separate armchair then you may have another option.

What I liked:
Have just returned from a week's stay at Hotel Cram, Barcelona. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They provided good advice on everything we asked and couldn't have been more helpful. The décor was modern, well designed (I am a designer myself) and spotlessly clean - if a little frayed here and there.
The rooftop pool is small, but as large or larger than any other rooftop pools in Barcelona that I encountered. It has 8 sun beds and plenty of tables and chairs. Also an outdoor shower. It is a fantastic facility and we appreciated being able to cool down and relax after a morning's sightseeing.
There was plenty of storage in the rooms and the free films, games, information and internet access (via the TV and wireless keyboard) was a bonus for siesta time and for browsing information on Barcelona.
The location was perfect - within walking distance of many attractions (including Casa Bastillo, MCCB, etc), very close to the Universitat Metro and lots of bars and restaurants. We tried 'Flaut' (mentioned below) and loved it for the great tapas and food. Also recommend 'Origins', which is nearby for fantastic tapas and Spanish produced ingredients. 'Teller Tapas' is another fantastic restaurant in the locality.
For good food further afield, try 'Shoko', Paseo Maritimo de la Barcelonetta - fantastic Asian cuisine in a great restaurant in the trendy beach area. Have a fantastic outdoor lounge area for after dinner drinks overlooking the ocean. Another favourite was 'Cuines Santa Caterina', Av. Francesc Cambo in El Born - bustling, great food and fantastic atmosphere and choice.
Make the effort to visit Sitges - a small coastal town about 30 minutes by train from central Barcelona. Bustling, great beaches, places to eat and people watch. Well worth the effort and a nice break from city life. Is a very gay friendly area.
What the hotel could do better:
Nothing I disliked.

What I liked:
quiet room spacious and clean
What the hotel could do better:
Breakfast very poor -I have stayed here before and the standard of the breakfast has fallen considerably which is a shame
Also disappointed that the downstairs bar is now closed permanently as it used to have a good atmosphere
