Hotel Capo d'Africa
Via Capo D'Africa 54
Rome, Italy
Neighborhood: Centro Storico
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Quiet

Rome is rich with history and many of its hotels are grand and old-fashioned; the exception, of course, is at the opposite extreme, embodied by capital-d Design statements like Aleph and Es. The gap in the hotel landscape between classic opulence and avant-garde chic loomed large, but has been filled rather successfully by Hotel Capo D'Africa — proof that compromise can be a virtue.
The building has some history, though not much compared to the ruins down the street — this was once a school, built in the early 20th century, and its facade remains unpretentious, with only a pair of palm trees flanking the doorway to dress it up. The interior is a different story, modern though unpretentiously so, more decorated than designed, with a cheery but tasteful palette and modern yet functional furniture.
Staffers are friendly and attentive — you will likely have a cup of coffee in your hand before you've been here five minutes — and the facilities are no less hospitable, with such niceties as broadband internet and a well-appointed gym. The guest rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, and smartly decorated in bright, warm colors, with understated modern furnishings and details in blonde wood.
Of special note is the rooftop terrace, and the quiet calm of this neighborhood, just a few blocks to the east of the Colosseum. No location in this sprawling city is truly central, which means that this spot is as convenient as any other, with the added benefit that it is not overrun by throngs of tourists. There are grander and more spectacular hotels, and certainly more daringly designed hotels — but many of us find Hotel Capo D'Africa to be just right.
