It’s not entirely irrelevant that Siena’s Hotel Certosa di Maggiano began its life in the 14th century as a monastery: to this day it retains a certain ascetic air, a feeling of escape from worldly concerns, an uncanny calm that could, we’re confident, quite reasonably be called spiritual.

Which is more than just a polite way to say Certosa di Maggiano offers a somewhat stripped-down hotel experience, in comparison to the grab bag of facilities and activities one finds at some of the more expansive resorts in this price range. There is a helipad, after all, so it’s not as though it’s for lack of capital—we prefer to think that these days there’s something rather focused about a hotel which presents itself simply as a quiet country retreat.

Seventeen rooms is all the old monastery could accommodate, and refreshingly there’s no “modern wing,” the achilles heel of many a historic hotel. Just seventeen rooms, converted from the original seventeen monks’ cells, and a surprisingly dazzling complement of public spaces; from the Emperor’s Hall, bearing portraits of the ancient Roman rulers, to the chapel, still serving its original purpose, or the library, all kitted out as a drawing room, the perfect place to meet your fellow travelers over coffee or cocktails.

The old monastery’s dining hall today serves as the restaurant, though in fairer weather meals are served out by the modest heated pool, with views of Siena’s famously picturesque rooftops. Should you feel claustrophobic inside the guest rooms or the library, you’ll find there’s no shortage of quiet places to stroll in the hotel’s extensive gardens—don’t be surprised if, one way or another, this place manages to induce a bout of quiet reflection.

Beautiful architecture, views and grounds. Close walking distance to Siena.

What the hotel could do better

Worst of the 6 hotels we stayed during our 3 week honeymoon through Italy & Spain. Service was disappointing. The 3 concierge(s) were cold, unknowledgeable, & a bit flustered when we asked any questions.

Bed had a noticeable seam between the 2 mattresses that was unpleasant. We requested another room with a smaller (double) solo mattress at the front desk. She was not apologetic and said it was impossible to do anything about it. She only mentioned that we could upgrade to a more expensive room. We have stayed in other hotels in Europe with 2 combined mattresses. They were comfortable & the seam virtually unnoticeable.

The hotel nickel & dimed for everything. At their rates, small necessities should be free, but I understand their need to make a buck, if at least things worked!

Ex #1: We needed to check our flight to Barcelona. No wireless, which is fine (after all this is a getaway...), but the single computer in the library had a usage fee, & did not even work. They apparently knew about the problem, & stated they would need to get someone to fix it. No one ever bothered to update us when/if it was repaired.

Ex #2: There were 3 apples in our room when we arrived. We ate 1, came back to the room, they were gone. I called in the morning to ask if they could bring us some. Someone from room service arrived and presented a check for 25 euros. Outrageous & insulting.

We stayed at La Posta Vecchia, Hotel Mas De Torrent, Hotel Lord Byron, Hotel Gran La Florida. All met or exceeded expectations. This hotel failed. We dined at Il Canto. Check was not presented at the end. When we checked out, I requested to see the itemized bill. Front desk (also our waitress/owner?) had the dinner bill in front of her, but decided to thumb through the menu and ring up each item on the calculator with an annoyed expression on her face. We were within our rights to see the charges; some wines were brought to us without us seeing the prices!

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
