The contrast couldn’t be greater between the self-styled “first spaceship hotel in the world,” the retro-futuristic Hotel Cocoon, and its setting: it’s more or less right at the seaside, but rather than condo complexes and luxury hotels for neighbors it’s bordered by a busy avenue (under which a passage leads from the Cocoon to the beach) and an ordinary residential neighborhood that’s anything but designed.

Salvador is a rough-edged and unpretentious city, a busy port city, not at all the sort of place you’d expect any kind of modern design hotel, much less one like the bizarre and whimsical Cocoon. Imagine something from a slightly campy Sixties sci-fi film come to life in 3-D and dropped to earth at the edge of a wild bamboo forest — at reception you wouldn’t be surprised to see Barbarella herself hand over your room keys.

The exterior is fanciful enough that it’s possible to enter the Cocoon with no idea at all what the rooms are going to look like. In fact it would be quite a letdown to walk through the doors of a spaceship only to be shown to a tasteful monochrome international-style loft bedroom. The interiors don’t disappoint; though calm enough to sleep in, the rooms are fairly bold, in gray concrete and light hardwood, with curvy transparent tubs beside softly glowing platform beds dressed in silk sheets.

A cocktail lounge opens onto the pool deck, which serves as not just the public centerpiece of the hotel but also, more poetically, as something of a mission statement. The Cocoon is inspired less by the charmingly dated science fiction films of the Fifties and Sixties and more by the 1985 Ron Howard film of the same name, in which a group of elderly Americans are rejuvenated by some alien life force at the bottom of a swimming pool next door to their retirement home.

This is a concept that, if anything, gains something in translation. In the United States (maybe anywhere in English-speaking world) a place that’s equal parts hip hotel and Ron Howard reference would be just plain bizarre. In this setting it only deepens the mystique — there’s really nothing else like Hotel Cocoon in Salvador, in Brazil, or anywhere in the world.

How to get there:

Hotel Cocoon & Lounge is 6 1/2 miles from Salvador International Airport. The drive takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

beautiful surroundings/bad service

I Liked

The rooms were great, up to par with what we like and look for in a hotel. The pool was wonderful and warm. There were comfortable and available lounge chairs every day. The place, rooms included was immaculate and designed nicely. The bartenders were very nice. The guests were wonderful probably because they were all Tablet Hotel guests.

I Disliked

The food was very limited. The chef was tempermental and not flexible. He was more concerned with serving his visiting friends dinner than the hotel guests. Dinner was marginal and lunch was worse. They would only serve a couple of things from the menu for lunch but every once in a while if you begged then they would make the pasta or something else from the menu. This would have been ok except for the fact that the location of the hotel is very far from everything. And I mean everything. There was not one restaurant in walking distance for lunch and for dinner, the only availability of food was a pizza place/steak restaurant across the street. The staff was not helpful at all. No matter what we asked for there were no suggestions. All they knew info on was how to call their friendly cab driver for us. Thank goodness for him or we would have been stuck at the hotel 24/7. Luckily the guests were wonderful and we made some nice friends who we explored the city with.

LOVED IT!

I Liked

I loved the pool! Nice intimate size, warm temperate water, totally relaxing..... Also loved the skylight in the shower. The general design of the hotel was very cool and funky - very unusual and unique. I am not a fan of cookie-cutter chain hotels. But most of all, we loved the people who worked there. Such nice friendly folks.

I Disliked

Internet service didn't work well. Room color - the whole place is cement, but they should paint the rooms inside white. Grey floors to ceilings can get depressing looking. The location was pretty far from the action. Not the most convenient, but good if you really want to get away from it all!

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
