The hotel will be closed for the month of June, 2009 due to emergency construction immediately adjacent to the hotel.

We’re not sure exactly who it is that decides these matters, but we’ve got it on good authority that the courtyard hotel is the next big Beijing thing. Of course we’re not talking about the American courtyard hotel, the big beige kind by the airport, with a warm pool in the middle giving everything a faint smell of bleach; we’re talking about the traditional Chinese version — and the Hotel Côté Cour SL is as fine an example as any.

Here off a narrow alley in Old Beijing you’ll find fourteen rooms and suites surrounding a central garden, complete with lily pond in the center. The interiors have authentic traditional character to spare, which is little diluted by the addition of modern conveniences like flat-screen televisions and wireless internet. They’ve got tactile comfort (down duvets and fine fabrics) and reserved, private atmosphere in spades — Côté Cour SL couldn’t feel more different from the massive megahotels that are Beijing’s usual business-traveler haunts.

Services, though, are minimal — a continental breakfast is served in the lounge, as are drinks later in the day. It’s a small price to pay, though, for this kind of exclusivity — if it’s activity you’re after, there are no end of places in Beijing to find it.

this is the best hotel i've ever stayed in; a real home from home. the staff were just wonderful. the chef was great and the evening meals he prepared were a delight. the rooms were extremely comfortable and the environment was truly superb - a little oasis in the centre of beijing. i cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. many thanks to everyone for making my 5 day stay fantastic.

I Disliked

the only thing i would suggest is that i would have liked to have tablet soap as well as liquid soap.

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

The staff was incredible. They were beyond our expectations. We truly felt attended to in every sense. I cant say enough great things about them.

I Disliked

The hotel was located on a hutong. I highly recommend getting a driver if you stay here. Very few taxis would drive down the hutong and anyone having a problem walking would be disappointed. We had a driver so we only had to take taxis home after dinner, but walking at night in the dark down the hutong was a little uncomfortable. Plus it was freezing while we were there. Only other thing was hotel could take away the dead trees in the courtyard and clean the beautiful koi pond better, but honestly the staff made up for any of this 100 fold. I would definately stay there again.

Hotel Cote Cour SL Beijing, china

By asynman based in Albert Park

Stayed November 2008

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

The hotel is in a great location & gave us a feel for the fast disippearing traditional life in Beijing. The traditional courtyard home style of the hotel gave us a feel for what life must have been like several hundreds of years ago in beijing & these 2 things alone made the stay memorable. The service and helpfulness of the staff was outstanding & their knowledge of Beijing made sight seeing very easy.

I Disliked

Breakfast lacked choice & imagination compaired to most comparable hotels& the charge for a luke warm & bitter cup of coffee or tea was tatally unreasonable & should be offered complimentary in such a small establishment.

Wonderful stay at the Hotel Cote Cour SL

By cfickling based in New York

Stayed October 2008

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

My wife and 5 year old son just spent a week in Beijing. One of the highlights was staying at the Cote Cour SL. The hotel provided a unique experience. It gave us a real sense of what it is like to actually live in Beijing. One can not say enough about the service provided by the hotel staff. Perhaps the best example is that our son turned 5 while we were in Beijing. The manger went out of his way and bought him a birthday present-Ping Pong paddles. Then spent the better part of an afternoon playing with my son. I am not sure who enjoyed my son's birthday more my son or the hotel manager. The rooms are well kept and clean. We found the location excellent but be forewarned not all taxi drivers know where the hotel is located. If you go I would advise you to have both the hotel's taxi card and a Beijing map with the hotel's location marked. The hotel is an excellent choice for children. We felt very safe letting our son play in the courtyard by himself. Something we would not do at a larger hotel. The staff would usually play with our son and most days when we were sightseeing he would complain that he wanted to go back to the hotel to play. The size of the hotel also allows you to meet and get to know the other guests. Wireless internet is free so don't forget your lap top. Overall we had a wonderful experience and highly recommend this hotel. When we return to Beijing we will stay here.

I Disliked

Nothing really. But keep in mind that taxi drivers may find it difficult to find. Have the hotel's taxi card and a map with the hotel's location marked. The hotel has both.

Wonderful Experience

By nheskett based in Kansas City

Stayed October 2008

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

The service was wonderful. Everyone at the hotel was welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. We stayed in two different rooms and both were very comfortable. The location in the Yanyue Hutong provides a real authenticity to the stay. The hotel is an easy taxi ride away from the cities many sites. The staff will write your directions in Mandarin as most taxi drivers do not speak English. Breakfast is included and very good. Lunch and dinner were delicious - simple flavors perfectly executed. The rooftop terrace was a lovely place to watch the sun set and enjoy a cold beer. Shawna, the owner, was there for a few days and she was full of recommendations and helpful suggestions about where to dine, where to visit. We can't wait to visit her new hotel in the Factory 798 district. It felt like home and we were truly sad to leave.

I Disliked

First room was right off of the front desk and could be a bit noisy. Recommend requesting a room off the main courtyard.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question.
