Once four separate buildings dating back as far as the fourteenth century, Cour des Loges is now a single hotel, and a masterful example of modern design meeting old-world charm. Jean-Louis and Jocelyne Sibuet have updated the Italian (yes, Italian) Renaissance style of the original dwellings with contemporary flourishes, and the result is a truly special place. The courtyard alone, doubling as lobby and ringed with arched walkways, is well worth the price of admission. Winding stone staircases and multi-level arcades join the buildings into one labyrinthine complex.

Antique hand-carved headboards and Philippe Starck-designed bathroom fixtures come together in the eclectic Cour des Loges style. Each room is unique, and intricately decorated, with fine fabrics and modern, high-design furniture meeting Tuscan antiques and period-influenced artwork. Parquet floors, antique armoires, beam ceilings, and a palette of deep burgundy reds and cool blues lend to the rich Renaissance atmosphere. Some rooms include fireplaces, gardens, and the duplex suites feature murals depicting historical scenes. Modern conveniences abound as well, including an indoor pool and sauna.

The hotel comes with two restaurants, Les Loges and Café-Epicerie, under the supervision of chef Anthony Bonnet. Beyond that you may be forced to venture outside the hotel and sample the local cuisine — this is, after all, Lyon, and it can be argued that some of the finest food in the world is to be found here.

Cour des Loges is an amazing hotel, a piece of Renaissance history compellingly updated with modern hotel design and service. Such a remarkable setting would be reason enough to visit, but when combined with modern luxury hotel service (including the region’s top concierge) and Lyon’s gastronomic delights, it may prove impossible to resist.
