Austria’s second city is a youthful town, a university town, and thus perfect for a hotel like the Daniel. After all these years finally smart modern design is available at budget rates: there’s nothing at the Daniel over 100 euros, and in fact the most basic rooms start at €59, a price that in most towns guarantees a fairly sad experience.
Here for that price you get a central location, moments from the train station and the Kunsthaus and a short walk from the old town, and you get a clever if stripped-down modern hotel, outfitted in a cheerfully utopian style by Berlin’s Studio Aisslinger. Rooms won’t quite bowl you over with luxury, but again they’re far more than adequate, air conditioned, with satellite TV and DVD players, internet access and charming little balconies, half of them painted in Easter-egg colors.
A breakfast buffet and a 24-hour espresso and tapas bar keep guests fueled up, and most anything else you’d need is a short walk away. What’s more, anything that’s not within walking distance is surely within range of the Daniel’s fleet of rental Vespas — this is a service we’d like to see a few more budget hotels take on. In fact we’d have no complaints if there were more hotels like the Daniel. But now we’re just daydreaming.
