It’s a strange animal in a slightly eccentric location — the Giraffe stands on Park Avenue South at 26th street, north of downtown and south of Midtown, well outside the bounds of the tourist traps and hipster neighborhoods. In this neighborhood you can safely forget about minimalism or Soho-style loft bedrooms — the Giraffe’s interiors are Moderne in style, a sort of French-inflected post-Art Deco look, a perfect complement to the vaguely European turn-of-the-century architecture along Madison and Park avenues. The experience isn’t overwhelmingly retro, but the rooftop garden and the elegant lobby, filled with the gentle strains of piano music, can’t help but carry a tinge of a bygone era. And the rooms are spacious, especially by New York hotel standards, with ten-foot ceilings and, in the deluxe rooms, French doors opening onto balconies over Park Avenue South.

The location is a touch on the quiet side, but this shouldn’t put you off; it’s certainly not remote, and like anywhere in Manhattan it’s close by to a wealth of dining and entertainment options. There’s a continental breakfast included in the rate, and a restaurant downstairs, as well as easy access to dozens of others nearby, from fast food to fine dining to the one and only Shake Shack.

Robert

Charming Hotel and Staff

By Robert based in Naples

Stayed June 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

The rooftop garden and the balcony off our room provided a bit of European romance in the middle of the city. Reasonable price including breakfast, afternoon wine/snack, and wireless internet. Within walking distance, there's a chic Houston's restaurant across the street (check out the incredible Butterfield horse sculpture!). Warm and accomodating staff - we arrived from the airport about 9:30am and they invited us to have breakfast while we waited for our room - no guff about arriving too early for check-in time.

I Disliked

Some street noise during the day as our fifth floor room overlooked Park Avenue.

I Liked

The hotel was in a great location with easy access to Manhattan. The hotel had a very pleasant lobby that offerred a real enjoyable after work / sightseeing socal period of wine and cheese that was truely enjoyable. The roof top patio was a pleasure for us travellers that still enjoy a drink and a smoke. The rooms with balcony's were a really nice touch and opened up the room significantly on a cool night.

I Disliked

I had not complaints whatsoever.

Attractive Property with Unfortunate Breakdowns

By pphaneuf based in Santa Monica

Stayed May 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

- Stylish large rooms - Very reasonable price - Good central location - Included breakfast in the lobby

I Disliked

In the middle of my shower, the water just stopped running. Apparently a pump blew. For some mysterious reason this also caused the elevators to stop. While The staff said this was not a recurring problem, the elevators blew out again when I was checking out. They automatically discounted half the proce of my room which was nice.

A Great Find

By mpayne5 based in Indianapois

Stayed April 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

The service at this small, intimate hotel was excellent. Staff are friendly and very service oriented. The location is good as very close to the green line which is great for uptown/downtown. The evening reception and breakfast in AM are a real plus. We had a suite so room was ample in size with nice bathroom. I was traveling with friends who had never visited NYC & they were equally impressed with the service. It's so much better than the large scale hotels where they can never remember a face. We had read that this is close to the "action" but it's an easy walk to the Union Square area which has a later night life & great farmers/art market on the weekend. I would definitely return to this hotel.

I Disliked

The floor plan for the suite could be better; if you have the closet door open you can't get in or out of the bedroom & if someone tries to get to the bathroom at the same time it doesn't work so well. Otherwise, the bedroom & bath were well laid out plan.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
