The Hotel Grande Bretagne is a bit of a departure for a Greek luxury hotel: rather than some sprawling compound out on a rock by the Aegean, this one is a Victorian mansion right in the bustling heart of Athens. Yes, you read that right — the meticulously restored facade is all Victorian, and wouldn't look out of place alongside some of London's classic hotels.

Perhaps that's why Winston Churchill was a fan, back in the original glory days of the Grande Bretagne. We say glory days because this grand old hotel allowed itself to fade a bit in the later decades of the last century — but after a two-year, obscenely expensive renovation, it is back in fighting form. The decor isn't so different, merely better; every oil painting, every piece of antique furniture restored to its original 1842 spendor. The rooms are palatial, elegant, yet tastefully pared down to avoid antique overload. Some have balconies overlooking no less a landmark than the Acropolis — obviously these are the ones to have.

Of course if you're not blessed with the finest view from your room, you can always have a look from the rooftop restaurant, with a panoramic view of all of Athens. And that deep Aegean blue that's lacking from the city setting is present in the spa, with a pool so blue (we know it sounds crazy) that you will swear you're alone in the sea. Service is absolutely top quality, the surroundings are impossibly plush, and the location is perfect, convenient to any number of downtown Athens destinations — it's hard to imagine a finer city hotel.

The hotel is in a great location and is quite beautiful and well-appointed.

I Disliked

The service was quite bad - from check in to check out (including luggage and concierge services). There was nothing that went quite right during our stay

Recently renovated "palace" style hotel. Concierge was fantastic - truly excellent. Booked air tickets, researched yacht charter. Recommended decent restaurants.

I Disliked

Bar restaurant staff is abrupt about closing down time. One definitely gets the impression they are more interested in going home than making your (very expensive) evening experience last an extra half hour if you want it to.

Old world glamour with all the modern conveniences

I Liked

This is a gorgeous hotel. I checked in early in the morning, not knowing if a room would be available immediately, and I was pleasantly surprised with a room and an upgrade to a butler floor. The room was beautiful in an old world fashion - large, lots of brocade and marble, and a gorgeous balcony overlooking the Parliament and Syntagmatos Square. The butler was very helpful with airport arrangements, etc. and the rooftop bar/restaurant was divine.

I Disliked

Great location, but if there is a strike (as often happens in Athens), the protests/marches tend to happen right in front of the hotel.

given the quality of hotels in athens, i rate this one highly - but still not of the quality in other capital cities around europe. the rooms are small for the prices you pay, and have an older feel to them - even though they have been renovated. the breakfast buffet on the rooftop is the best attraction, with a spectacular view of the acropolis. we would stay here again, but again this is reflective of what else is on offer.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
