Northern California’s wine country has no shortage of lodgings—seemingly every third house is a bed and breakfast. Hotel Healdsburg, though, is something unique; this full service luxury hotel bucks the faux-rustic trend in favor of sleek modern design.
Guest rooms are spacious and smartly decorated, with wood floors and Tibetan rugs, and most open through French doors onto private balconies with views of the town square or the hotel gardens. Bathrooms are impeccably designed, modern, with six-foot soaking tubs of grey stone and separate walk-in showers. Comfort, obviously, is key, evident from the Frette bathrobes and goose down duvets. If you want to go all out, visit the Couples Suite in the spa, offering a double-size soaking tub and a pair of in-room massage tables.
For leisure, there’s a sixty-foot outdoor pool and a well-equipped fitness center, as well as a full-service spa, using all-natural custom-blended products. There are sixty wineries within ten minutes of Healdsburg, and an untold number of restaurants—but the hotel’s own restaurant, the Dry Creek Kitchen, happens to be one of the best. Celebrity chef Charlie Palmer, of New York’s Aureole, serves a simple cuisine emphasizing fresh Sonoma County produce in an unpretentious and relaxed setting. Needless to say, the wine list is rather impressive as well. You’ll be tempted to skip those tastings and vineyard tours, and just shut yourself in the hotel.

What I liked:
I almost never take the time to review a hotel, as Tablet does a pretty excellent job of screening those that it offers on its website. But, the Hotel Healdsburg was so enchanting, it warranted the extra effort. First, the hotel is situated on the main square in Healdsburg. After a long day wine tasting at the nearby vinyards, it was great to be able to walk around town without worrying about driving. The hotel did an excellent job of creating secluded public spaces on the property so that you can find your own spot to relax & read a book or enjoy a glass of wine without many other guests around. Great friendly service without being too intrusive. Healdsburg is a great alternative to the crowded Napa towns. It charmed me and I would choose it again vs. the overpriced comparative hotels in Yountville.
What the hotel could do better:
The bathrooms in the rooms could use some updating. They are fairly utilitarian without much style.
The hotel also could do a better job managing its complimentary breakfast. On a Sunday morning, they were under-staffed and weren't able to turn tables quickly enough to accommodate waiting guests.

What I liked:
The rooms are spacious and because it was low season, we almost had the entire third floor to ourselves! We loved our three quiet and rejuvenating days there! Another big plus was the delicious breakfasts buffet served in the lobby every morning until 10:00 am!
What the hotel could do better:
Since breakfasts are served downstairs every morning, and if you woke up late (after 10:30am), you'll just have to go hungry since they do not have room service in the morning! Thank goodness for a large number of cafes and restaurants just a stone's throw away!
