Hotel Kanra Kyoto
185 Kita-machi Karasuma-Dori, Rokujo-kudaru
Kyoto, Japan
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Lively
29 Rooms
The lazy stereotype had it that Tokyo was the modern one and Kyoto the traditional one. There’s a grain of truth there, but it’s a bit more complicated than that. Hotel Kanra Kyoto is an unmistakably modern design hotel, but one that’s deeply rooted in the nation’s urban culture and in Kyoto’s local tradition.
Formerly home to one of Japan’s notorious cram schools, this five-story building on a peaceful street has been transformed into a 29-room hotel by the Tokyo-based firm UDS. Upon entering the lobby, where a series of light- and sound-sensitive panels create new colors and patterns depending on the changing environment, you’d be forgiven for thinking the entire hotel is an ultra-modern art installation. But UDS has gone to great lengths to ensure a sense of Kyoto tradition isn’t overwhelmed by the interiors’ modernity.
At Kanra, even the sleekest guest rooms have traditional tatami mats covering the living-room floors. These long rooms are drenched in stylish comfort, from the extra-wide beds and cushiony sofas to the selection of local teas and the white paper-hangings that accent the walls. Bathrooms feature tubs made of Japanese cypress, and many of the independent, glass-walled showers feature small rock gardens. Booking a deluxe room (or larger) ensures a private courtyard garden, while the Kanra Suite boasts a secluded outdoor bath.
The Kitchen Kanra restaurant is just as dedicated to harmonious interaction with the city of Kyoto, offering traditional obanzai cuisine, tapas-style, along with seasonal char-grilled vegetables. The wine list is full of regional selections, while the sake and beer are crafted from the water of the city itself.
How to get there:
Hotel Kanra Kyoto is an 8 minute walk from the Kyoto train station, which is 80 minutes from Kansai International airport by express train. Please contact CustomerService@TabletHotels.com for assistance with airport transfers.
