Hotel La Colombe d'Or
Place de Gaulle
Saint Paul de Vence, France
Style: Traditional Elegance
Atmosphere: Lively
26 Rooms
Closed in November and December.
Many decades ago this was a likely spot to run into the leading lights of the European art scene; the likes of Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and Braque dined here during time spent in the scenic hilltop village of Saint Paul de Vence. Short on funds, as artists so often are, the members of this informal salon were prone to painting for their supper, donating original works as payment for meals. Thus the extraordinary atmosphere at La Colombe d’Or — where else can you dine in front of a mural by Fernand Léger, surrounded by drawings and watercolors by the greatest of the Romantics and early Modernists. This property has soul - its art-related credentials are not a marketing trick. It had a dark tiled pool before it became fashionable - and there is a mobile by Calder next to it.
Today you’re less likely to see starving artists, and more likely to rub elbows with Parisian celebrities. The renown of the restaurant and the allure of this rich history keep the guest rooms full in the summer - season after season.
The rooms in the original stone farmhouse are charmingly authentic, while those in the Fifties addition are perhaps more luxurious, though of course they lack some of the antique appeal. Many have dramatic views over the hillsides and valleys surrounding Saint Paul de Vence.
Even during the height of haute cuisine mania, the Colombe d’Or’s restaurant was defiantly traditional. Now, as authentic country cooking takes over, it’s more in demand than ever. Here you’ll enjoy traditional favorites made from local produce and regional specialties like lamb and smoked salmon, before retiring to the splendor of your guest room in the picture-perfect sixteenth-century farmhouse.
