It's about time squeaky-clean Toronto had a style transplant, and it's probably no surprise that this one happens to be a Québecois import. The Germain family's first Ontario outpost adds a dash of style to the theater district, in the form of this scratch-built 11-story red brick building, which hides a magnificently inviting split-level lobby (and a first-class French restaurant, Chez Victor) behind its impressive stainless-steel and glass entryway.

For too long the lobby has been about delivering a visual impact and little else, or worse, reduced to a desk crammed under a stairwell. This is a public space worth lounging in, with a library, an espresso bar, and a double-sided open fireplace surrounded with daybeds and white leather couches. Elevator walls are lined with poetry in English and French against a background of cloud imagery, which sounds terribly precious but is actually carried off with style.

Some exquisite facades hide uninspired rooms, but not so here; rooms are spacious, open-plan, with massive white Frette-dressed beds set against backgrounds of rich brown wood. Furniture is sleek and modern, as are the amenities, like flat-screen TVs and generous, functional desks. Showers are separated from the living space by glass walls—no longer the most original trick in the hotelier's handbook, but it works, and if you're feeling modest, just draw the blinds and concentrate on stuffing your suitcase with the Aveda bath products.

Wonderful Sojourn in Toronto

By mapman based in Katonah

Stayed June 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

The location is fabulous. Second City Comedy Club right across the street and a Euro club with roof deck also across the street. Five minute walk to Rogers Center and five more to the water.

I Disliked

My only complaint was poor air conditioning. I set the temp to icicle and I still had to sleep without a blanket. Complained once only and an engineer got it started but, as I said, it never got cool.

Another wonderful stay

By eyeung347761 based in Hong Kong

Stayed April 2009

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

Stylish and cosy ambience - the sitting room setting of the lobby makes you feel completely at home. Professional and efficient delivery of the front desk and concierge, and doormen were always warm, helpful and courtesy. Colleagues at the restaurant for breakfast were wonderfully cheerful - setting a high note for everyday. Joe at the restaurant even remembered us despite our last stay was in 2006. Convenient location with a great varieties of restuarants, eat-outs and shops in neighbourhood.

I Disliked

The neighborhood seemed to have become quite nosy in the middle of the night, which could be quite disturbing if you were trying to fight the jet-lag.

Rob + Mary

Le Germain | Toronto

By Rob + Mary based in Washington

Stayed November 2008

Overall rating: Good

I Liked

beautiful building ----- library + roaring fire inside the vestibul. lovely staff + chez victor [their cafe] provided unique and delicate toronto fare. the rooms were so clean, so comfortable + so inviting. generous in size with very high ceilings .... the turn down service included fluffing the pillows, bottled waters and chocolates. we had a personally written note under our door every morning + upon check in - a slate slab was waiting in our room with all sorts of gourmet treats.

I Disliked

location is central - but surrounded by several late night venues. the noise from these could be a little wearisome.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
