It’s not the first city you’d check if you’re in the market for a high-design boutique hotel, but it certainly fits the bill — Panama City’s Hotel Manrey is as visually extravagant as anything in the region. From the glossy black monolith of a façade to the gleaming chrome of the entryway to the black furniture and starry-night lighting of the lounge, everything’s geared towards an outsized first impression, which it unquestionably delivers.
By the time you make your way upstairs, you’re most likely ready to see the visuals dialed down a notch. Fortunately the rooms set out in a slightly more focused manner, with a monochrome palette and sleek modern furniture setting a more restful tone. Some have city views, some balconies, others glassed-in interior gardens, featuring perhaps more greenery than you’d expect from a clean-lined modern boutique.
Of course a hotel like this — the first of its kind in Panama City — isn’t going to go quietly into the night. In the evening the rationale for the lobby’s design fireworks becomes clear, as the Manrey becomes one of the city center’s meeting points. Two restaurants pack them in, but it’s the bars that really shine; the Manrey Bar occupies the bulk of the interior lounge space, and the rooftop pool deck, complete with semi-private cabana-style sofas, offers drinks with a view of the skyline.

What the hotel could do better:
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Manrey and would definitely return if we were in Panama City! There are, however, several small details that the hotel could improve upon in the rooms - our patio doors didn't close completely, the bathroom door could open both ways but hit the sprinkler if opened to the outside, room door catch scraped the wall, automatic garbage can didn't open automatically for the first few days and our turn-down service was sporadic (not that it was a problem, it was just odd)
It would also be nice if there was clear signage in the elevator about when the rooftop deck was booked for a private event so that guest don't go up expecting to be able to use the area only to be turned back (this happened to us twice in 10 days).
