Finally, with the arrival of the newly renovated Hotel Maya, the decades-old design boutique wave has touched ground in Kuala Lumpur. In a city that’s clearly no stranger to modern building — the iconic Petronas Towers, for example, stand just blocks away — there’s been a distinctly conservative flavor to the local hotels, and the glossy-but-staid five-stars have been the only game in town.
It’s calling itself a “boutique urban resort,” a conceit that’s perhaps a bit old hat in New York or even Bangkok, but that’s welcome and indeed overdue in KL. Like the chain hotels, it’s a high-rise — the only way to build here is up — but its interiors are fetchingly decked out in bamboo, metal and glass, organized along clean, minimalist lines, in the best urban boutique tradition. Rooms are stylish, if not earth-shatteringly original, all warm creams, hardwood floors, and black lacquer, in plans ranging from the humble studio to the expansive executive suite.
What’s above and beyond, at least compared to its Western boutique cousins, is the Hotel Maya’s list of services, including 24-hour business services (obligatory in this part of downtown KL) as well as a small handful of bars and restaurants. The Anggun spa offers a long list of treatments, as well as a full gym, a yoga studio, and a heated hydrotherapy pool, complete with juice bar and a selection of health-conscious dishes.
