Hotel Neiburgs

Riga, Latvia

Style: Modern Design

Atmosphere: Lively

55 Rooms

It’s almost impossible to overstate how far Latvian tourism has come in the two decades since independence. When the pioneering boutique hotels were opening in New York and London, Riga was still operating under a command economy. But once the gates were thrown open, it didn’t take long for a very accomplished hospitality scene to evolve — and today it’s home to hotels like the understatedly chic Hotel Neiburgs, a stylish Art Nouveau edifice whose subtly modern interiors and well-chosen comforts, it’s safe to say, don’t exactly scream “Eastern bloc.”

In fact with a few more hotels of this caliber, Riga could be next in line for “next Prague” status. Best to book in and get established before the masses descend. The smallest rooms are billed as studio apartments, and the residential touches — radiators, rugs, kitchenettes — mean they’re more cozy than cramped. As you move up, the finishes get finer, the spaces larger, and by the time you’re in a suite it feels more like an impeccably designed private residence than a typical boutique hotel room.

Best of all the Neiburgs is a hotel that either a) doesn’t have any idea how cool it is or b) is discreet and/or savvy enough not to clobber you about the head with the knowledge. We’re guessing it’s the latter — places like this one don’t just happen by accident.
