In some ways Santa Barbara feels like what certain parts of Los Angeles might once have been, or could have been, before Hollywood and all that came along with it — just a pleasant, pretty little enclave on the Pacific coast, all palm trees and Spanish-style villas, and an unhurried pace to suit such an untroubled place. This, at least, is the vision of Santa Barbara presented by the Hotel Oceana, a hotel whose unpretentious charm feels almost radical, and where the glamour of it all is a natural byproduct of the people and the place, not something drummed up with P.R. firms and velvet ropes.
It’s right downtown, on the oceanfront Cabrillo Boulevard strip, a stone’s throw from the pier, the marina, or the State Street shops, and some of the better-placed rooms offer views of the Pacific. All the accommodations, no matter the view, are decorated in a bright and breezy style, and with the exception of the “cozy” little single room, they’re all blessed with plentiful space. There’s a well-equipped little gym and a pair of pools, one a little garden refuge ringed with cabanas, the other with views of the ocean, while the spa offers a mobile service, delivering treatments in-room.

What I liked:
Proximity to the ocean and the complimentary bicycles.
What the hotel could do better:
Have more knowledge about local restaurants, e.g. locations and closing times. We arrived in the late evening (10pm) and asked what was still open for food. They were eager to help but we ended up on a bit of a wild goose chase.
