Berlin’s Hotel Q! is as stylish a space as any of the high-end retail shops around the corner on the Kurfürstendamm—and quite a bit more affordable. Unlike similarly avant-garde hotels in, say, London or Milan, Q! shows that high-design hotel interiors need not demand a premium price.
The design, courtesy of the LA/Berlin-based firm Graft, is ultra-modern and minimal, to be sure. Yet the clichés of the modern design hotel are scrupulously avoided. The palette depends as heavily on deep crimson red and chestnut-brown hardwood as it does on clinical laboratory white, and the now-commonplace glass-walled bath is one-upped by Q’s innovation: in the twelve rooms that have baths, the tubs are sunken into slate-grey terra cotta and built in to wood-paneled consoles attached to the bedside.
Furnishings and flat-screen televisions are built into sloping Kubrick-white walls that curve as they meet ceilings and floors, lending a slightly retro tinge to the high modernism of the décor. And the public spaces are, if anything, even more daring, with organically curving surfaces covered in red linoleum and soft, theatrical lighting. The hotel bar looks like the backdrop for a fashion shoot, and one imagines it would be mobbed were it not for the fact that it’s a members-only affair—yes, hotel patrons count as members. The same rule applies in the eclectic restaurant, as well as what’s perhaps the most unique hotel amenity we’ve seen anywhere: the heated “sand room” is like a beach within the hotel, where guests lounge on chaises (and, presumably, lie back and think of the ocean).

What I liked:
Wonderful use of light. Not a misplaced light source in the entire hotel. Smart and welcoming, creating a very cool, subdued and elegant atmosphere. The bathtub and bed-combo is clever, in a number of ways, most of which are suited for a couple. Comfortable beds, but perhaps that goes without saying.
What the hotel could do better:
A working WIFI is a must for a modern hotel, and "No, I can't do anything about it right now", is just not an acceptable answer from the staff. Couldn't get the connection to work with any Android device during the stay. It's 2011, every smart hotel should be reliably wired.

What I liked:
Good balance of quality & price.
What the hotel could do better:
Nothing, had a wonderful stay! Less trendy. These very 'designed' hotels tend to date quickly and more so, hard to maintain the architecture. Repair and maintenance end up getting dropped. For example, the sink is close to the bed frame. The splash of the water is starting to stain and bleach the wood. To maintain this is alot of money and hence will not be done.

What I liked:
Design and location. In spite of being close to Ku'damm, the room was very quiet.
