The Hotel Sacher Salzburg was born the Hotel D'Autriche in 1866, and remains to this day one of Salzburg's grandest hotels, occupying a privileged position along the banks of the Salzach river. And even today it's better known under another name — the Österreichischer Hof, or, mercifully, the ÖH for short.
Only since 1988 has it come under the umbrella of the Gürtler family, owners of the Hotel Sacher Wien and makers of the storied Original Sacher-Torte, the world-famous chocolate cake. Salzburg is a city rich with history, with Mozart among its gifts to the world — so the ÖH is understandably a traditional place, heavy with antique furniture and paintings. The staff come dressed in 19th-century uniforms and behave accordingly, offering old-fashioned efficient service fit for royals and aristocrats.
Rooms are no less elegant, stocked with reproductions and authentic antiques, and overlooking either the river or the Old Town and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. All have the requisite marble bathrooms and many come with private balconies from which to enjoy the views.
Dining is, naturally, one of the Österreichischer Hof's strong points. The Zirbelzimmer restaurant (awarded with 1 toque) is old-fashioned fine dining, Austrian style, beneath an historic paneled ceiling, and there are a number of less formal venues as well, from the piano bar to the Café Sacher Salzburg, whose terrace overlooks the river. And don't forget about the Sacher-Torte — it would be a waste to come this far and neglect to visit the Sacher Confiserie, offering a full range of Sacher pastries and confections.

What I liked:
The rooms are elegantly appointed with modern touches. The bed, linens, towels, bathroom, etc are first class....not old and stodgy as what could be with a classic hotel. Not a sound was heard from other rooms.
The location is perfect as all you need to do is walk across a bridge to the charming old town. The staff was totally friendly and helpful. Breakfast was the best we had on our trip to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The Sacher is an excellent choice for Salzburg.
What the hotel could do better:
Wifi was difficult to get anywhere else but by the door, unfortunately but the walls are thick.

What I liked:
The location and the style. Also, the staff is very courteous and professional.
What the hotel could do better:
Our stay would've been more pleasant if they had a full service spa. Having a warm towel rack is nice especially in the winter.

What I liked:
I loved the decor and the grand old hotel feel. The breakfast buffet was excellent, as was the location, just across the river from the Old Town of Salzburg and adjacent to the Schloss Mirabell. Staff was friendly and helpful.
What the hotel could do better:
The hotel needs to find a way to hide the televisions sets - they were a jarring note in otherwise beautifully appointed rooms. Also, turn-downs at around 7 pm during the summer, including the closing of drapes, are rather early for those of us who like to enjoy the evening light in our rooms.
