Hotel Saint Cecilia
112 Academy Drive
Austin, TX, USA
Style: Modern Design
Atmosphere: Lively
14 Rooms
For a while now Austin has been one of the United States’ best-kept secrets: a little enclave of progressive thought, high-tech savvy, and hipster culture, cleverly hidden in Texas, which is not the first place you’d look — and it’s disguised as the state capital, no less. But until recently its hotel situation lagged a bit behind the times — one new and notable exception being the Hotel Saint Cecilia.
It shares ownership with another notable exception, the well-loved Hotel San Jose. But while the San Jose is essentially a budget boutique, a rehabilitated motel, the Saint Cecilia takes off running in the direction of “luxury guest house” and never really stops. Of course Austin-style luxury includes not just those wildly expensive Hästens handmade mattresses, but an in-house vintage vinyl library as well. Put it this way: the Saint Cecilia’s blend of bold modern colors and impeccably curated antiques wouldn’t even register as upscale in Houston or Dallas; here in Austin it’s clear at a glance that this is the place to stay.
The lounge is guests-only, which is crucial, as a hotel like this can go from hot ticket to velvet rope in no time at all. The Saint Cecilia, by contrast, mixes a generous helping of bed and breakfast in with its rock-and-roll cocktail — ensuring it a longer half-life than the average hip hotel.

Amazing hotel, small, intimate, amazing amenities, coolest mini bar, excellent friendly staff, had to move to their sister hotel, the san jose for my last night, also incredibly cool.... highly recommended
What the hotel could do better
bar service was a bit slow which was weird since there were less than 10 people there but still very friendly, also for the price, it would be nice to have more than minimal room service.....

Entirely unique ambiance created by the artful combination of newly built bungalows with the original house that must have been a single family residence across beautiful tree-covered yard. The bungalows are arranged around a rectangular lap pool and patio. Stunning modern interior design in the bungalows. Alluring patio outside the main house beckons guests to sit outside and enjoy drinks and conversation.
What the hotel could do better
The air conditioning unit downstairs and ourside out bungalow was noisy and work us up repeatedly, as did the interior system, which didn't seem to be working properly, leaving our room uncomfortably stuffy--Austin is too hot in the summertime to sleep with the windows open. Also, the metal gate to the pool area clanged very loudly as guests came in and out throughout the night. Surprisingly I mentioned this when I was asked how we enjoyed our stay during checkout the next morning, and the staff member readily acknowleged both problems but seemed unfazed, failing completely to notice my dissatisfaction when I drscribed our experience as "underwhelming." Surprisingly she failed to proffer any sort of recompense in the form of a credit or other complimentary service. This was remarkable since that would be standard operating procedure at similarly priced exclusive hotels. We could just as easily have spent a sleepless night at an economy hotel and spent the $300 differential elsewhere.

The St. Cecilia has a fabulous atmosphere marrying turn of the century antiquity with a modern, hipster rock vibe. It's very well done and might be Liz Lambert's hallmark project.
The service was hit or severely miss. Wendy, I believe, at the bar was fantastic. Down to earth, articulate, and excited about the food and making sure we had a great experience. There was no pretension here and I think she captures the essence of what service in Austin should be...smart and cool. I was very impressed by her. In fact, everyone at the bar was great.
What the hotel could do better
The rest of the service over the weekend was either apathetic or pretentious or a combination of the two. When arriving, we were welcomed, shown the record collection and taken to our room. It was OK, but personally nothing else at this hotel is superb so I was dissatisfied with OK. I really would have liked someone to show us around a bit, tell us about the amazing stuff in the mini bar or about the killer Hasten bed. There's a balance between being non-intrusive and uninterested and I think they came off as uninterested.
When we left, it was worse. We were handed our check and sent on our way. They didn't ask us what we thought, they didn't care that we were leaving. Words were kept to a minimum. They didn't offer to help with our luggage. It was as personal as Motel 6 gets and completely unacceptable for a hotel of this caliber.
I hope that perfecting service is top priority for St. Cecilia as it has too much potential not to nail this critical aspect.
