Hotel Straf
Via San Raffaele, 3
Milan, Italy
Neighborhood: Piazza del Duomo
Style: Cutting-Edge
Atmosphere: Lively
66 Rooms
The Straf is one of the new breed of high-design hotels to have recently opened in downtown Milan. The city that this hotel inhabits is less the dingy industrial center of decades past, and more the new Milan, the center of all things stylish in Italy. In this case, the architect, Vincenzo de Cotiis, is also a fashion designer — who better to know what the haute couture set wants from a hotel.
The exterior is vintage 19th-century, but architect Vincenzo De Cotiis’s (a fashion designer of 'Haute' collection) interiors, in concrete and black slate with scratched mirrors and gauzed glass, are utterly modern. Don’t expect spacious rooms with expansive views; these are more like stylish prison cells, or panic rooms to which harried fashionistas retreat in order to shut out the outside world. The rooms, however well-appointed with flat-screen satellite TVs and high-speed internet, are not meant to be lounged in at great length — most guests will prefer to pass time in the stylish Bar Straf, perhaps playing spot-the-celebrity, lounging in the massage chairs in the chromotherapy or aromatherapy rooms, or working out in the 24-hour gym (an oddity for this sort of hotel, but certainly nothing to complain about). And though the hotel does serve dinner, there is no restaurant; this alone means one cannot hole up here for long.
Which is entirely the point. No tourist trap, this is a place for busy professionals, or at least furious shoppers. This district, the Golden Quadrangle, is home to the best of the city’s already-impressive boutiques; Dolce and Gabbana and Prada’s shops are just around the corner. And fashion isn’t everything, even in Milan — the Duomo Cathedral, the Galleria and La Scala are all mere steps from the hotel.
Kids:
Guests over the age of 12 are considered adults. Some rooms accommodate 3 or more. The "classic" room sleeps up to 3 guests. For crib/cot, must book "classic" room or larger. For 2 adults + rollaway bed, must book "classic" or larger. For 2 adults + 2 kids beyond crib age, must book "none" room or larger. Connecting rooms available. Can be confirmed upon reservation.
Cribs are available and may be subject to an additional fee. Roll-away beds available for an additional fee of €66. No additional charges for kids beyond crib/roll-away.
There are no babysitting or daycare services available. Daycare services provided, kids between the ages of 0 and 3 can be dropped off on a fixed schedule. The restaurant is kid-friendly.

general style and atmosphere is fine.
reception guys were nice and helpful.
What the hotel could do better
breakfast - total disaster - too many guests, to few tables. total mess. people fighting for tables. stuff forgetting about orders. buffet constantly empty - running out of the food.
the room. we were expecting something more edgy in terms of interior design. it was just a typical room with some arty bits.
the lift - one is not enough for that many rooms and guests. every time we had to wait for ages for that bloody lift to come.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.
