There was a time when travel to Brazil, for the uninitiated at least, meant a choice between São Paulo and Rio. But it’s a big country, and with a little development, the coast of Bahia is coming into its own, tempting visitors northwards into Brazil’s warmer and wilder reaches. It’s a venture that’s well worth taking — it’s here that you’ll find places like the Hotel Toca do Marlin.
It’s part of the Resort do Cavalo Marinho, so it’s not quite as far-flung and secluded as some other Bahian hotels we could name. It is, however, surrounded by a nature reserve, which obviously lends a certain idyllic aspect to the proceedings. But as stunning as the setting may be, the hotel does its level best to keep up. The design, by architect Bennet Niscenwajg, mixes crisp, clean modernist lines with rustic and weathered materials, an expression of the two sides of modern Bahia.
We’re not big believers in the usefulness of the star-rating system for hotels — but the fact that the Toca do Marlin bills itself as a six-star should at least give you some idea of what to expect. Though it’s small — just ten suites — there’s no creature comfort left neglected. And the activities go a bit beyond just lounging on the beach. The pool is an obvious must, and an upscale restaurant and wine bar are welcome as well. But here you can deep-sea fish to your heart’s content, and there’s a working horse ranch for anything from leisurely touring to proper equestrian lessons.
