One of the only brand-new ground-up hotel projects to open in San Francisco this decade, the Vitale stands on the newly revitalized Embarcadero, right across from the foodie mecca that is the rehabilitated Ferry Building. This is new-school luxury hospitality, distinct from the stately palaces of Nob Hill and the high-rise hotels of the financial district, an unpretentious boutique style — albeit one with a rooftop spa and a stunning view of the bay.
Surfaces are finished in natural wood and stone, and colors are earthy, natural — very little high-design gloss here. This is a town that likes its urbanity with a side of humility; hence the aromatherapy and yoga along with the cocktail bar and the plasma TVs. Rooms are bright and airy, with full-length windows, and the better half look out over the bay, the bridge, and Alcatraz.
The Americano restaurant serves Northern California cuisine with Italian influences, all fresh from local sources, including the Ferry Building’s Saturday farmer’s market. And some clever partnerships expand the Vitale’s services beyond the boutique norm — the doors of the Bay Club gym and the Golden Gateway Swim and Tennis club are open to Vitale guests at low preferred rates.

What I liked:
I was in town for a Moped rally. Moped as in, motorcycle with pedals. 300 of us were terrorizing the city. I was coming back to Hotel Vitale for an AMAZING retreat from my own crazy weekend. The staff was SO GOOD to me. They treated me like a VIP, even though I was staying in their cheapest room on a last-minute-booking deal and probably paying half what their other guests were paying. They let me keep my moped (not a pretty bike, by any means!) at the valet stand under the front awning, and kept watch over it all night. They kept my bags for me for the day after I had checked out, but was going to spend the day exploring the city. At every turn, they impressed me more and more with their attentiveness, kindness and thorough execution of their duties. It was such great service, from the moment I arrived until half a day after I'd checked out. And the fresh lavender on the room # placards in the hallway, are you kidding me? AMAZING.
What the hotel could do better:
Although I really appreciated the opportunity to keep my moped out front, they told me they were only going to charge me 1/2 the usual $45 price to keep a motorcycle. I appreciated that, because, come on it's not like the Valet actually even drives the moped away. So, I was somewhat disappointed by the full $45 charges for both nights of moped parking ($90 total). But they did keep that bike safe, so I can't really complain. Thanks!
