Possibly Glasgow’s finest small hotel, and certainly its poshest, Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens is the favorite of many a visiting actor or pop star. But don’t hold that against it. Some hotels try altogether too hard—with flashy design, precious modern cuisine, and always-packed nightclubs—to court the most fashionable guests, and compared to these hip hotels, this quiet row of converted Victorian townhouses may seem terribly grown-up.

That’s entirely the point, though—this is classic hospitality, in classic surroundings, with no gimmicks or flash, just the simple things, done right. The 49 guest rooms are spacious, and while elegantly decorated, are never ostentatious. Some antique-heavy hotels feel so fussy you’ll be afraid to touch anything; not so here. The mahogany four-posters, many of them kings, are meant to be slept in, not just admired, and as old-fashioned as the bedrooms may be, the bathrooms are utterly modern—given the choice between authentic century-old claw-foot tubs and brand new high-pressure rain showers, we’ll take the latter.

You may not have come to Glasgow for the food, but you won’t leave cracking jokes about it either. Wherever there's a Hotel du Vin there's a Hotel du Vin Bistro, serving modern, upscale bistro fare accompanied by a long list of wines, and nearly as many whiskies in the adjoining bar. The drawing rooms and the garden are equally suitable for afternoon tea, though this hotel is so intimate and private you may be surprised to see other guests, shattering the illusion that this place is yours alone.

A must for a stay in Glasgow

By swilkins based in San Francisco

Stayed April 2009

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

I was so pleased with the upgraded room(thanks Tablet Hotels) that, upon dropping my bag in the my room, I immediately went back down to the front desk to book a second night. The rooms are all phenomenal and well appointed. The service was personal, discreet but inviting, and well done overall. And I loved the location in the West End in the Devonshire Gardens. It's actually very easy to walk to the tube stop and the surroundings of the hotel are beautiful. I have recommended this as the best hotel I've stayed in all year!

I Disliked

Nothing.

The Place to Stay in Glasgow

By sminton based in Chambesy

Stayed December 2008

Overall rating: Excellent

I Liked

Beautiful, romantic hotel. The room was amazing, with wonderful little touches throughout. And the restaurant was delicious! Service was very attentive throughout our stay.

I Disliked

My only very minor complaints were that the location was a little bit of a walk from the main areas of Glasgow (difficult for a Christmas trip when it was so cold, but would not be a problem in the summer), and we were not able to have high tea on the spur of the moment, as they required reservations, even though there was plenty of room in the restaurant. But, these are minor and would not keep us from staying there every time we go to Glasgow.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question.
