Between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, on the Pacific coast of Jalisco, lies the El Tamarindo Beach & Golf Resort, the kind of remote and exclusive escape that’s sadly uncommon in Mexico these days. This rather idyllic stretch of coast is not just undeveloped, it’s practically untouched, with two miles of private beach set amid two thousand acres of nature preserve.
In this setting it’s only natural that the accommodations should be exquisitely private as well. There are just twenty-nine of them, freestanding, with traditional thatched roofs atop crisp contemporary interiors. All have marble showers, outdoor daybeds and private plunge pools; some sit right on the oceanfront, with views of the beach visible from the beds through sliding doors, while others sit farther back, hidden away in the gardens or the jungle palms.
As you’d guess from the name, there’s a fairly impressive beach, and ample opportunity for golf — additionally you’ll find a full-service spa offering open-air treatments, a pool and two tennis courts, as well as facilities for snorkeling, kayaking and windsurfing. It’s proof positive that there’s still a bit of luxe escapism to be found around Mexico, if one knows where to look; in this case just off highway 200, a half hour or so north of Colima.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?
The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.
This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.
How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?
We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.
This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.
The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.
Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!
