Vienna suffers no shortage of history; seemingly around every bend there’s a reminder of the city’s rich cultural heritage, and the hotel scene reflects this fact—most of Vienna’s better hotels are opulent classical palaces, untouched by the passage of time or the changing of fashions.

Hotel Das Triest, however, is the delightful exception, a stylish and utterly modern hotel designed by Sir Terence Conran and attracting the usual suspects—artistic and creative types, as well as anyone bored by the traditional—as its clientele. The building was once a station on the Vienna-Trieste stagecoach line (hence the name), and still bears the vaulted ceilings of the original plan, but little else.

The interiors are smart and modern, obviously, with expertly curated details—surprisingly bold colors to set off the minimal backdrop, and quality furnishing and fixtures—alongside obvious crowd-pleasers like Frette linens and Molton Brown bath products. Black-and-white fine art photographs replace the typical inoffensive hotel artworks, and fresh flowers abound in the guest rooms as well as the public spaces.

Top-floor rooms have high ceilings and access to private terraces as well as a rooftop lounge, and the public spaces are just as inviting, from the warm earth tones of the Silverbar to the cool and crisp elegance of the restaurant, Collio. These stylish spaces, along with the central location, turn Das Triest into a hub of social activity—quite the contrast to the rarefied air of the historic grand hotels.

Das not what I expected!

by Chris from Munich

Stayed July 2008

I Liked

The front desk staff was very helpful and plesant (plus a few were quite attractive to boot!). The breakfast buffet was very nice, especially sitting outside in the garden. It is also close (not in, but close to) to the main tourist areas - a 10 minute walk to be in the center of it all. Since we drove to Vienna, they also have parking. The rooms were very clean, and the bathroom was big and spacious. Nice Molton Brown toiletries.

I Disliked

It was very dated inside, and was beggining to show its age. It is not located in the niceest area, but it was not bad... The rooms were dated and showing wear - especially the carpets! The sheets on the bed were not the best quality, but was comfortable. The "gym" is a joke - there is a treadmill, a few light weights and mats- all in a hallway. We had higher expectations - especially since it was listed on Tablet. This would be the first time we were dissapointed on a Tablet choice. I probably would try another hotel next time in Vienna - it just was not a hotel I looked forward coming back to relax in after a long day of sightseeing.

Das Triest

by Richelle from London

Overall rating: Excellent

Stayed April 2008

I Liked

The room was great. Particularly the bed, linens and size of bathroom. Very comfortable stay. Breakfast was very good, bar area really pleasant.

I Disliked

The only criticism was that there is a very small lounge area. It was being used for outside corporate events and was smoky, still full of dirty crockery and difficult to hotel guests to enjoy

Low key yet convenient; away from the tourist buzz

by Tsan-shou from Lin Kou Hsiang

Overall rating: Good

Stayed April 2008

I Liked

Convenient location to Staaopera and St. Stephan Church, walking distance to major city scenice spots including the newly remodeled Albertini Exhibition Hall, the historic Hotel Sacher Wien...Quiet surrounding, superb breakfast -- probably one of the freshest and best in Europe, very friendly and helpful restaurant staffs.

I Disliked

Reception staffs (those good looking guys) are a bit too cool. Not as warm and helpful as expected especially when you check in during a freezing winter day.

What is the Tablet Hotels Meter?

The Tablet Hotels Meter is a running average of the ratings given to a hotel by registered Tablet Hotels users who have actually stayed at the hotel. The scores are based on responses to our feedback survey, which is sent automatically to every user after the completion of a hotel stay booked through Tablet Hotels. We receive responses every day, the scores change accordingly - in real-time.

Tablet Hotels hotel ranking meter

This way we can be absolutely certain of the integrity of the rating process - on some travel websites, there is nothing preventing the General Manager from giving his own hotel a perfect score, or the concierge from across the street, posing as a dissatisfied guest, giving his competitor all zeros. You have probably seen questionable user reviews on other websites, whether flowery advertising copy written by fake guests, or vague negative attacks written anonymously. You will not see any of this on Tablet Hotels.

How does a hotel remain a Tablet Hotel?

We have selected nothing but the most unique and extraordinary properties from around the world, but circumstances at individual hotels can change quickly. Therefore it is up to our customers to inform us if one of our properties has taken a turn for the worse. The Tablet Hotels Meter works on a 20-point scale, and for a hotel to keep its place on Tablet Hotels, the magic number is 15.

This is not just an arbitrary figure; we have two years' worth of data, from past user feedback, and we have found that the hotels whose scores drop below 15 are those experiencing recurring problems, and guest detailed reports reflect the same serious concern, whether it be service, room quality, noise or something else.

The Tablet Hotels Meter will not display a score until we have had at least two customers rate the hotel. This way one person's unfortunate stay cannot carry too much weight. And once five guests have returned their verdicts, the rating becomes a more scientific measure of the opinion of the average guest. At this point, if the hotel's average overall score drops below 15, the hotel will be automatically removed from the site.

Your opinion really does count; in this case, it is the only thing keeping the hotels you visit on the site. On a more positive note, the hotels with top scores are featured in our "Tablet 10" lists. And as a side benefit, this system will encourage hotels to extend their best level of service to Tablet Hotels users - we turn every Tablet Hotels client into a reviewer!

Hotel Review and Travel Recommendation Guidelines

This is a moderated forum; all hotel reviews and travel recommendations must follow the Tablet Hotels and Tablet Talk guidelines below. We will not publish a hotel review or a travel recommendation unless it is:

Original

Please don't quote from other sources or otherwise reprint material published elsewhere, including your own comments on other travel review sites.

Relevant to other travelers

This is not a forum for general political, ethical or religious opinions. Nor is it a place for questions or comments directed to property representatives, Tablet Inc. staff, or other Tablet Talk members - we encourage you to use private channels for such communications. It should go without saying that we don't want to see personal insults or language that a reasonable observer might deem offensive. And please keep your submissions current - no need to mention a trip that happened more than two years ago.

A personal opinion or recommendation

Hotel reviews are restricted to verified guests who booked their stays through TabletHotels.com. Likewise, travel recommendations must be based on first-hand experience. No recommendations or reviews written by owners or managers posing as guests, or by current or past employees, or second-hand hearsay from others. If your friend/cousin/neighbor has something to contribute then you should invite them to join the community so that they may share their opinions themselves.

We do not allow recommendations to be written based on incentives from property owners/management. Offering discounts or upgrades or other special treatment in exchange for reviews is very much against the rules, and any property found to be engaging in this sort of thing will be dealt with most unforgivingly.

Non-commercial

Comment spam is a serious problem, and we will reject even the most borderline cases. No commercial web address, e-mail addresses or contact information. No promotional material of any kind. We reserve the right to reject any URL for any reason.

Written with standard e-mail etiquette

This is a forum with a broad readership; don't assume that hotel owners in Milan and travel agents in Guangzhou are familiar with the latest slang and shorthand, or that typographic symbols will be rendered properly across all platforms. Please don't shout in ALL CAPS - in general, keep it readable. And for various boring technical reasons, HTML tags and most forms of text and paragraph formatting, even simple lists, will not survive the posting process.

These reviews are posted exclusively by verified guests whose stays were booked through TabletHotels.com. We do encourage our clients to express their opinions, and what makes a hotel experience great is often something subjective, a matter of personal taste. At the same time, many of the hotels we list are extreme in one dimension or another, and are bound to disappoint somebody somewhere. These reviews are an excellent way to identify a hotel's particular quirks, and thereby avoid a poor hotel-guest match. But remember: if a hotel's overall customer rating falls lower than 15 out of 20, the hotel will be removed from our listings.

The opinions expressed in these reviews are solely those of our clients; the opinions expressed in any hotel management responses are solely those of the hotels themselves. We do not endorse any of the opinions expressed within the reviews, and we are not affiliated with any of the hotels in question. We reserve the right to remove any of the review or management response at our discretion.
